Chocolate cichlids are cool! Honestly just try it, see if it works, if it doesn't sell it try a new one. You could end up with the two coolest fish if you just tried them out. Fish can take fights and heal up anything can happen

Hey man I appreciate the advice. I have taken this strategy before and my Oscar barely came back from it TWICE. Second time wasn't my fault but its a long story. I can't risk it anymore, not speaking for everybody, just my particular situation.

I managed to stick a jack Dempsey with mine. It's reallyrare that these two fish get along together, so I wouldn't try it.Plecos are a good choice. So are most medium-sizedbottom-dwellers.

Now, I haven't hear anyone suggest this yet, but dependingon how big your Oscar is, you could put adultconvict cichlids in with it. I have 3 in the tank with mine, and I had a parrotcichlid until it died of age. But myOscar is a wimp. My pleco bullies him. So I don't know. Depends on your fishand how big the convicts are. You would have to buy full-grown convicts foreven a 8" Oscar.
Silver dollars are another good idea. Great-looking, ratherpassive, and they can bring a lot of life to the tank.
Let me think...another idea would be to buy a second O. Theymay not get along, so its hit or miss. Jade eye cichlids are also supposedly agood choice. Severums too. Chocolate cichlids, Blue Acara (as adults) andFiremouths are all a great idea.
If the Oscar is 6" anything under 3" Will be food.8" anything under 4" would be food. so for a full-grown, you're gonnawant nothing under 6"

A Giraffe Catfish. Very fun fish to have. Sandy bottom critter though. He will just run around the tank "vacuuming" the bottom, or your finger if you let them. They aren't predatory like a RTC, won't bother the Oscar at all.

I think the proper response here really depends on the temperament of your oscar. Me personally, my tiger oscar will kill anything that isn't schooling.

I agree, great fish to have! until they start exceeding 2ft in length that is... 2ft fish + 5x2ft tank = very unhappy fish

Thanks for all the suggestions guys! I think imma go the silver dollar route. How about geophages? Anyone have luck with those?

Again, I feel like it depends on the temperament of your oscar. I've known earth eaters to have almost mbuna level aggression. One bigger than your oscar will more than likely bully it.
