Woke up this morning to find my baby Senegal dead, he was eating fine 2 days ago, params are good, nitrate was 10 ppm when I tested, and since I don't know when he died that could be the cause of it climbing. WC and hope my other fish are good. I hate mystery deaths.

Me and a friend talked about it, we attributed it purely to that it was a big box CB Senegal and he even could of had perm damage from being beat up by 3-4 inch bala sharks that were in the same tiny, little, cave-less tanks. I hate losing bichir :/ so done w/ CB anything

Sorry about your loss.

I have my first poly right now, he's about 3" and getting food to him is hard. I see him eating some mysis shrimp so that's good but it doesn't seem like he eats a lot. He's trying to compete with a GT and 6 congo tetras so bottom food is tough. I tried sinking carnivore pellets and the GT and congos are eating those too. I just feel like he should be getting more food. I don't know if he even eats pellets but I think I'll start dropping them in there at night for him.

Sorry for my ignorance but what does CB mean?

Etan, when that happened with my red wolf (he steals food from the bichirs in my main tank) i would distract him by feeding him a whole earthworm (longer then himself lol) and would then drop in the half worms i feed my bichirs, so it would give them time to eat. and they know now they gotta scarf em up, my rope usually gets his before it hits the sand haha. i would try something similar, feed the rest on the other side of the tank and drop some sinking stuff down for the bichir. My senegal also had a bit of competition, he had 2 Heckelli arcara, 1 geophagus balzani, and an albino senegal that was a half inch larger. He wouldnt back down, plus i spread sinking pellets all over the tank so nobody had to fight haha. If you dont think the GT would be able to eat them dropping little pieces of cut worm would be a good idea, never had a bichir that wouldnt take em.

hell yeah mike, i have a thing for bichirs though so losing them sucks a bit more then other fish to me. It still sucks but i feel like bichirs deserve more respect then to be farm bred on a massive scale like the senegal, and what they've done to the lower jaws they've began to farm is disgusting really. they are inbred and have such bad health problems, it really reminds me of puppy farm dogs. It could be good or it could go horrible. You know all this though mike haha probably hate it just as much as i do if not more
 
Always sucks to loose a fish, How long did you have this fish how long was the tank running for ? How frequently do you do WC's ? and what were you feeding ??

I mean no offense but blaming bad genetics's because it CB might be an easy way to explain it away but I doubt it's the case. Not a big deal if it's being ept solo but if it had tankmates then i'd really try to figure out the cause of death or watch the others closely. If you didn't know how long it was dead for then really you dont know if it had symptoms that you also didn't see, or that it didn't choke on food or develop bloat etc.

I blame it because this is my 3rd time its happened with big box senegals, ive never lost fish due to illness or water quality. Tank mates were 2 heckelli (2-3 inch) albino senegal (only slightly larger then the one that died) leopard cten (3 inch) and a butterfly fish (3 inch). It has been running for over a year! And it used to have more in it.

My feeding schedule was 2 days I would feed chopped worm, rest of the week hikari carnivore and brine shrimp. I also feed my butterfly crickets, he may have eaten one and couldn't digest, but then I would imagine he would have been bloated. He was not. I knew he was alive the night before at 3 am, then I woke up to find him dead so maximum time is like 6-7 hours. That's if he died right after he went to sleep. He could have had internal injuries from the beating the bala sharks were giving him in the tank he was bought from. I had him about a month. I have been keeping an eye on the others, everybody's acting normal, everybody's feeding normally

Ya keep an eye out. I normally recommend QT for 30 days, 45 is safer.If the fish has some sort of internal parasite load or issue then it's not unusual for it to take a month before issues pop up, Most problems will at least show symptoms within 30-45 days after that it's safe to say they are healthy, but before that you never know what they might have. Espically these mass produced fish it only takes one in that bag of 100 to come in diying of something internal, and the rest catch in transport landing healthy because they were only just exposed ...

Sucks either way, Hopefully your right , but i'd watch everyone just to make sure

Ah yes I see that being a possibility, I need to QT for much much longer. I was told a week or 2 would be fine and I haven't heard anything else about it till the other thread I made under FW disease. I hope I'm right too, I use preventative doses of mela and Pima fix but nothing for internal parasites. Especially buying big box fish, just gotta be more careful. I'm done w/ Senegal's unless any WCs come up haha. Ive never had a health issue with a good solid WC fish.
