Pothos plant in cichlid tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
South.... central america I see it all pretty much the same
So If I were to grow them in the tank just let them attack the roots and what not and they will get longer and branch out more? The pothos isn't poisonous for them to eat are they?

Just a FYI, a minor point , but...none or your cichlids are South American, the JD and Texas are from Mexico and US (considered part of North American)the JD and Thorichthys range can stretch south into Guatemala(Central America) and the nanoluteus is from Panama and Costa Rica, part of Central America.
And I use pothos with those, without a problem.

Duane those are crazy roots with odd colors. Never seen that before.

Pothos are a very poor fully aquatic plant, submerge the leaves and they will die. Basically only the roots sit in the water and suck up some ammonia before the Bio filter and some nitrate. Check out the link below for tons of info on the plant!

The roots in my pic, are an entanglement of pothos and papyrus.
The papyrus get kind of red when hanging suspended in water.
Here's a shot from the top of the tank.

The only fish I've had that will seriously decimate pothos and papyrus once they are established are Herichthys bocourti and pearsei, and they are considered almost totally vegetarian.
They will eat roots, branches and leaves, the bocourti even gnaw on driftwood in my tanks.

One time I tried submerging the entire plant, but my severums ate it all up. Still have those severums, so no they don't appear to be toxic.

Pothos are non toxic to fish. Humans and other animals are a different story.

I hope that was implied. Do not eat the pothos op. lol

Another perfect example: While most humans are extremely sensitive to poison ivy, white-tail deer eats it without issue.
