Hey any updates :) also what gravel are you using in the first picture?

Sorry late reply. The fish in the original picture died for reasons I'm not sure of. I was growing it out with some small bichirs but then it one day swelled up and died.

Just last weekend though I found another one that is about 2" and seems very healthy so far. The gravel is sold by Jebo brand. 'black gravel' in their catalog. Any of your LFS that carries JEBO brand products should be able to get it for you.

Hopefully I have more luck this time around:

Great pics as usual
Cohazard, my old one that I posted, also seemed to die out of nowhere.

They are very prone to stress; one of mine died of simply being chased by another fish and leading it to bloat/sbd
The other one developed some kind of external disease and even when treated with Paraguard, it was too late

I have yet to seen a big/adult version of the blue/golds that you and I have posted because I believe they have very weak immune systems and will also stress if kept with anything that is more aggressive (even though in your case bichirs should have been no problem)

Good luck with the new one, if I would advise anything it would be the use of probiotics to prevent disease/loss
Best to keep this kind of fish solo IMO

Thanks for the awesome advice, sorry to hear you lost yours too. This time I am growing out with some small angelfish and I noticed some fighting between one dark zebra in particular and the blue gold dempsey.

I began to theorized stress could develop and lead to disease. Glad I read your post after getting some sleep. Now I'm going to stress until I get another tank going to move the dempsey to lol.

I've seen one decently sized blue gold raised by babybetta. I hope to surpass that one.

What probiotic would you recommend?

No problem
I use Immune Plus by Tropical Science, it contains billions of "protector" bacteria for internal and external disease prevention

I started using it on all my fish and those prone to parasites (flowerhorns, beani, etc.) and never had any issues since, so it seems to work
$15 bottle treats 1700+ gallons

Picked up these two baby blues today.

They seem to have no deformity and may turn out pretty nice.

Best of luck. Never seen a blue gold as an adult.

Much appreciated. I saw some on that one farms Facebook page. In my experience this blue gold is growing faster than any ebjd I ever had and is pretty mean.

I'm sure I can grow it to be beast.

Most of my ebjd died got them from amazing_betta, they are weak genetics but the platinums and golds are thriving with one surviving ebjd

There are weak strains out there. I'm sure baby betas are not weak maybe some bad luck on your end.

These new baby blues had inch at the Los but I bought Em anyways because of the head shape looked good. They survived treatment and are eating great!
