Catfish that looks like wells

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Wes offered S. biwaensis before. And, several smaller species are being aquacultured in Asia. Even with a few species being on the IUCN Red List, it's likely the reason more species aren't imported is due to lack of demand.

The Sheathfish I mentioned earlier was formerly classified as Silurus apogon, and they are pretty cool-looking fish with a silvery to blue sheen. They max out around two feet or a little more, so they are Monster, but not too Monster. ;)

This is the fish I've seen at the store (about 8" and $30):

This one is a more mature specimen:

he also had some s. soldatovi a few months ago

Really? That's exciting. Never seen even a pic of one of those (reliably ID'ed). I wonder who snatched them.

I have tried to find out who has bought the soldatovi and the biwaensis, but nobody came forward - Very odd. Even people who bought the glanis have been strangely quiet. I wonder why.

Yes, I remember your earnest tree-shaking efforts to start people talking and sharing their Silurus species. Very little fruit fell out of that tree. So now you appear one of the leading figures who will teach us about S. glanis at least :)

I don't think there is any specific reason why. There are few of them kept and perhaps their keepers are mostly off of the MFK grid or more of the readers than posters. Criticism from peers and the possible FWC attention (as elaborated by Necrocanis in the thread on his glanis) are not helping either.

It's too bad, because firstly - they truly are one of the monsters OF the Monster Fish world - and there are no regulations or laws surrounding them at this time - We all would benefit from sharing information and knowledge, just like we do with all the other fish on here. I see a lot more posts about Arapaima, in comparison, which are even harder to maintain.
Ah well!

It really is a shame. I permanently have the chance to get them at good price so one day I'll probably just give in and you'll get lots of updates.. :D

yes, I've brought in the following

silurus glanis "regular"
silurus glanis "albino" Czech
silurus glanis "albino" Germany-wild caught
Silurus biwaensis, very neat
Silurus soldovati
silurus asotus
and I'm coming up on some silurus lithopodus, but pricey .
