I am setting up a 36Lx30Wx26H tank and am going to keep some Zebra Knifefish (Gymnotus Pedanopterus) along with some other types of fish. Been researching them and see they like sandy bottoms, slightly acid enviroments, very clean water and little to no current. What type/grade of sand would appropriate for their proper care? I know better than to keep them in silica sand. Would a sand/gravel mix be feasible? Thanks.

The best sand to use is play sand or pool filter sand. I use play sand but most people prefer the other. If you mix gravel in too it will end up on top of the sand, even if you put it under. If you like the look though, its up to you.

pfs can be mixed , with some success with gravel,,, you probably want lots more sand than gravel

I always throw a little gravel and river rock in for texture and to break things up. I don't think I have a single tank that is just sand.

I would say these guys have the right strategy

Do you have a ratio for mixing or is it just a few handfuls.

I personally didn't use any sand to gravel ratio just used enough gravel to cover the bottom of the tank the added the sand layer and mixed. Sand far out weighs gravel and rocks

Is sand something to use with knifefish? Or can they be kept with just gravel. Thanks
