is it wrong to feed fish live food

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I wouldn't say its wrong whatsoever as most fish food has fish in it and as said already someone else just does the killing for you. How many cod get pulled out of the sea everyday and put on plates? so its not cruel to buy a frozen fish for dinner and neither is it wrong to feed live fish to your fish thats just my opinion anyway.

Yes fish have the chance to escape from predators in the wild but depriving a predator from hunting i would consider to be more wrong than using live food.

As i said this is just my opinion but if a fish would hunt in its natural environment i think that providing it the chance to hunt occasionally atleast is good for the fish. I like to replicate the fishes natural environment as closely as possible so feeding live fish to a fish that would usually hunt and kill its food i think is not wrong. Taking this from a fishes point if you was a red bellied piranha would it be very fun eating frozen pawns and pellets compared to hunting fish?

I don't think it's wrong. As long as you know where the fish came from and if it has any diseases your good. Feeding an all pellet diet will end up giving the fish more vitamins and veggies. I have a black worm and a red wiggler culture so all my fish can eat live foods without me worrying about them getting a disease.

If you think feeders don't have the luxury of hiding in a aquarium. Off your lights, wait till night time and keep the tank heavily planted. They get a chance to hide before immediately eaten.
Feeding pellets is the same as feeding fish to your fish, only your fish don't get to kill it. (it's been said a few times here..)
And when you don't feed feeders to you fish, aren't you taking their luxury to feel like a normal fish? Even if you can afford to make its home as similar as its natural habitat but won't feed it feeders.. Isn't it being unfair to your pet to not being able to hunt and feed like it's supposed to??

Not wrong, but most feeder fish are not raised in the healthiest of conditions, so the chance of introducing parasites and/or disease become risky. And the feeder fish nutrient value is often lacking.
Pellets are cooked/processed so any diseases or parasites are killed, and depending on the company, infused with healthy ingredients.
Many of our aquarium fish are not piscivores, but omnivores so feeding other fish is really not part of their everyday diet in nature.

I don't see anthing wrong with it. If the fish have been QT'ed and are free of any unwanted pathogens feeding them a live fish every now and then is fine IMO. I wouldn't make a steady diet of it and perfer to feed my fish pellets. If you raise your own feeders or like I said QT the fish for a few weeks to make sure they are healthy and use them as an occasional treat.

This. Formulated good quality food is better for a steady diet, but imo feeding a predatory fish a HEALTHy live fish as a occasionl treat is not wrong. However, live fish as a steady diet is not the healthiest on them, as well as expensive if your runnin to the lfs every week for feeders

Disagree with your second point that pellets are the same as feedin live but your fish dont get to kill it. Good high quality pellets made from a good brand or source are made with some things that live fish would have, but can be made without the bad things in feeders, as well as no risk of introducing diseases into your tank from a unhealthy feeder.

Think what he means skittle is the moral points of buying pellets for your fish apposed to feedling live healthy fish to them. Basically saying fish are still going to be killed even if your buying pellets so live feeding isn't morally wrong.

Like some people say its discusting and cruel to feed live fish but then go and pick up the cichlid pellets for their oscars lol.
