Well worth the money? fly river turtle

emergency:

just noticed that my FRT has a extremly reddened beak. The entire edging of my FRT's mouth seems to have "blood" all over. the turtle just ate carrots yesterday so i'm sure if it's staining at the beak.

Looks like an actual injury. I'm worrying if it's caused by calcium dificiency or a bacterial breakout. Just did a WC yesteray and boosted the temp to around 84 degrees.

You must provide either direct sunlight, foods containing vitamin D, or a supplement containing vitamin D in order for the FRT to be able to absorb calcium.

Hence I said proper diet and other things which include but not limited to are calcium, lighting, vitamins and good water.

researched on calcium deficiency and bacterial infects on turtles. nothing popped up about the red mouth plate.

Maybe he just bumped into something and scraped up his face?

looks nothing like a scrape. It's just a red covering the lip of the turtle. It pretty much looks like dull red lipstick. My turtle looks like the joker now.

man, i'm actually hoping it's the stains of the carrots he ate yesterday. Got a close look and I don't see any open wound injuries other than this carroty red/orange.

as far as I know, calcium D3 supplements do not replace a UVB light. i am speaking from experience of keeping land Chelonia and please correct me if the situation is very different with FRTs, I am no expert on them. The thing about calcium D3 supplements is that they are not enough for most reptiles as a staple source of calcium/D3. an over excessive amount of this vitamin supplement can cause impaction and other problems. Even thin glass/ arcrylic of any sort can 'block' output of natural UVB from the sun. I would recommend an appropriate intensity UVB bulb instead of dietary supplements, however I am no expert on this particular species so please correct me if I am wrong.
