It costs me less than $3 for mechanical and bio for me is free since I use local cinder lava.$3 every couple of months is certainly worth their performance. I've been around the fx5 enough to know that it doesn't come close to the value of a 2262. I also run my 3 2262s that are on my 1400 into a DIY trickle tower that runs into a 110 gallon sump that gravity feeds into the tank. It's an awesome system and I love it's performance. Spendy up front but so worth it.

Ok how much does it cost most people. I would imagine most people will fill it with more readily available options.

Ok once again around $3-4 for mech and depending on what you use for bio $20-$50. But that never has to be replaced. Two buckets of pond matrix will run about $50 and is awesome bio material, better than basically anything out there that isn't ceramic. Huge amount of surface area.

Polyester pillow and quilt backing. Basically the same as what you buy from the Lfs for a fraction the cost. Or is you have to use something that has a fish on the package deep blue poly pads are 3.25 on kensfish.com. That's a 30"x18" sheet. One of those easily is enough for tho mech stage in a 2262.
