Stock (now that I've actually used a tape measure rather than eyeball them) would be a 7 inch oscar and roughly 3 inch JD (the JD is currently 2.5 and thus still bite size, so I have to wait until he's bigger). No live plants, and will be using a mix of PFS and blasting sand for the lovely look they combine to make. What brand and size of canister would be the best choice? I've only ever used HOBs and am used to getting roughly the next size up for my tanks (like an AC 110 for my 65), how do you do it for canisters? Also, I love how you can chose your own media for canisters.... but how do you know what you need? Can I get tips on how to add a prefilter too? I've read that those help keep canisters a little cleaner.

no clue on a prefilter but I would go with a eheim 2217 personally or a FX5 but the flow maybe a little too much.

I love the eheim classics for smaller tanks, they last for ever, run quite and are quite cheap for a complete setup ready to go out of the box!

Fx5 would be good though if you ever buy a bigger tank or so + they are quite and also find them quite cheap for what you get.

You can even use a smaller canister and use a OTTO or so to create flow + mech for the tank which I do believe works better then allowing the canister to do all the mech.

Is an OTTO the same as a HOB, or something else? How high should intake tube be off sand if my fish aren't the type to disrupt it that much?

Otto sits inside the tank, power filter believe they are called. I used to use this exact setup (2217 + otto 2000LPH) on 6x2x2s with heavy stocks and the water was always clean. A hob may work just as well I dont know HOBS are pretty much dead down here. The otto will create flow which the HOB wont do much of which is what I would want to push all the oscar crap into the eheim inlet.

I would aim for 3-6 inches off the base, I have in the past had 2217s right on the actual sand and no issues but I know there have been issues.

The new aqua top brand of canister filters or called 'sun-sun' filters on amazon are great for the money with good reviews. I was able to purchase two for my 90 at a cheaper cost than a Fluval or Eheim.
