Recommendations for a good/cheap LED light

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Doomedie, do you have a tank (or partial)shot with those LEDs? That looks like something to check into, especially using PVC as holders. Sounds right up my alley, I like the mixture of colors.

Here's a short video. I turned off my 6,000k bulb cause it gives a lot glair when filming.

this is all very helpful guys thank you. I'll absolutely check all of this out. We did purposely get a light that only shined in the middle to help reduce stress and allow the fish to get away if they need to but I dislike it for photos. Since I have a giant (I mean giant) piece of floating driftwood and tons of cover now, I wanted to more light as well as a corner light maybe actually in the tank for photo purposes. I like the idea of the lights that have an adjustable amount of blue spectrum.

We've got a 125 gallon so we'll be fitting probably two 24" lights or maybe 36" depending on the brand. The ones we've looked at are from a local source and we'd be paying about $140 for two sets without it being marked up retail. We're looking to spend around that much. I have the luxury of purchasing lights at wholesale value so as long as one of my wholesalers carries a brand you guys recommend, I could likely get a deal and get some quality lights.

This particular tank will likely never have any live plants (except maybe java moss if I can figure out how to keep it in my smaller tank lol) since it will remain a SA cichlid tank so I'm not concerned over anything other than how the fish look. I will have a 240g (the 8 foot one) here shortly and will eventually try my hand at some aquascaping since my monsters won't be heavy diggers (maybe) so any lights recommendations would be awesome for that as well.

I pulled some photos from the internet so I am in no way trying to take credit for these, but how could you get a light like this besides with a great camera. There are a few different styles I like. I like how these lights somewhat "spotlights" the fish. Very bright, but not harsh and almost making the tank look dark except where it lights up the fish. My lights are nowhere near anything like these even in person.

This one has tannins and still looks beautiful

If your going planted I'd go with beamsworks LEDs I found several 48" lights for $50-60+ shipping on ebay. I just got the led strips cause I already had a ballast from a different set of LEDs.

I looked up beamworks, they seem nice enough for what I'm looking for. What is the difference between the double bright and the single bright? Like I understand double bright would be best for planted, but what about for esthetic purposes?

Double bright is brighter, basically twice as bright as the single. As far as your question regarding the pictures, most of those are tanks that have a black background with a very high end camera. A high end camera will make a lot of things look great.

Oh absolutely the camera has something to do with it, but I've seen many of these type of tanks and lights in person and they still look beautiful. I'd like to strive towards this look even if it doesn't show up quite like this with my phone.
