Hello All--

I'm going to be selling my Malawis and I'm not sure what basis to use to come up with a price.

I know I need to sell them for less than the LFS, but many of mine are large adults and/or they aren't at the LFS.

I need to get rid of them, but I don't want to rip myself off.

Any ideas?

Hello,

Sad to hear you're leaving the african community! Mostly mbuna? The less common the better as long as they are male. I would start at the best online price and post on craigslist. It really hurts that you need them gone as you turn down the low ball offers which is just about everyone it seems. Adults at 3 inches? 13-15 bucks depending on the type. Private sellers always have to go lower than retail unless its some special fish. That's my thought on the matter. You will probably have to go lower to sale them quickly.

Don't be sad...I'm only switching lakes. I've had Malawis for 6 or 7 years and I'm ready for something new that isn't so aggressive. ..so I'm going to cyprichromis (Tany).

I've had so many changes in my fish I haven't kept my signature current.

I'll check online for some ballpark numbers and go from there.

Thanks

Depends somewhat on exactly what you have at this point, including whether you have any breeding groups or pairs. If it was me I'd look on aquabid for fish you have and use that as a baseline. You could adjust accordingly depending whether you want to move them all in a quick sale, or not in a hurry and have something nice or less common that the right person might be looking for, etc.

I hear you on being ready to move on to something different. Doing that is what's kept me in the hobby.

Now that's a great idea. I stumbled onto that site while looking for cyprichromis. I don't have any breeding pairs, but I've tried to keep the little harder to find than usual Malawis. Also, if someone has large adults and doesn't want new fish getting eaten, they might want other large adults.

On moving on, I would like to just get a 2nd tank, but I don't have the room, time, or money to maintain two tanks at this point in life.

What type of malawi do you have, didn't notice you say. Anyways, Mbuna are cheaper than haps and peacocks i find. Full grown nice male peacocks and haps go for about 40-50 in store here in canada, so maybe 20 each private down south maybe 25. Are they wild caught? Mbuna are cheaper, selling in store for no more than about 35 bucks for full grown adults here. I'd say maybe the 15 dollar range would be correct. Good luck with the cyps, which species are you getting? I currently keep WC leptosoma blue flash, and a group of F1 Leptosoma katete
