I've a 12.5" Poly palmas polli and want to put my Senegalus (currently in a grow out) in at some point. The Senegalus is 6.5". At what point do you think it'll be safe to do so?
Thanks for your help

maybe at 8" or 9"

4"

Polls aren't really the type to prey on smaller bichirs. Mainly lower jaws do that.

You can move your sen over right now with no issues except maybe some territorial nipping at first.

Thanks for the replies-this was what I was thinking. I've gauged how big a piece of prawn the polli eats and felt I could be safe. I just got a 3" endlicheri at the weekend which I'm growing out too.
BTW Cohazard- been a secret admirer of your Polys for years. Your fish, set-up and pics are stunning. Would like some of the bigger lower jaws that you have at some point. Your new congi are superb

I agree that you're safe to put them together right now. I have a 7" endli with a 12" lap, 15" endli and 16" congicus and they don't pay any attention to him. Plus there's also 2 ornates and a teugelsi ranging from 6-9". All of them have been fine.

Wow thank you Rob, I really appreciate the kind words about my fish keeping. I see you've been a member for a long time too, in fact back in 2006 is when I started getting into serious bichir collecting, along with my friend FishNCash.

Sadly because of personal matters I've had to liquidate my collection several times over the years, including my male and female platinum's, but I always find myself coming back when I get the chance.

I am really excited about the new congis! We will see them turn into giants over the next couple years. I'll be keeping an eye out for the growth updates on your endlicheri. All this talk about your stock I hope you post some pics soon :)

That's been my exact experience too, except for a 'kayo' congicus I had back in 2008 that ate three small albino senegals. I could not keep senegals back then without them getting eaten.

That's actually been my experience with sens as well! When I just had my endli, I put a 7" sen with her and she gobbled it up that same night! Then I tried again later with a bigger one and she ate that one too! I guess they just have a taste for sens. I might try again but this time I'll wait till its about 10".

Nice hahaha I hate when they do that. I have some small 6-8" bichirs in with my 18" pbb's and ansorgii and so far no issues luckily. It was a risk but I didn't have space for another grow-out tank.

I'm a bit idle on the picture front I'm afraid-my set-up pales in comparison to tanks like yours. I'm interested how the endlicheri will grow though. I lost a 14" WC Nigerian endlicheri 5 years ago as a jumper-never managed to bring myself to get another until now. I also bought a stunning 4" NGT as at the same time so I guess I'll have to update the two. The store I got them from had some weeksii too-never seen them for sale before in UK-but didn't have funds to get one.
The first fish I ever got when I started fish keeping back in 1986 were 2 polli. I loved the look of them and I got mine as it brought back a lot of memories. I'd love more lower jaws but the selection here in the UK is'nt great. Do see a lot of Reedfish which are cheap most times. Only ever seen one Congicus-it was badly beaten up, on its own in a tank but the store owner wouldn't sell it to me :irked:

Toss in a few plastic plants like I did and a medium sized piece of driftwood and you're done lol that's all I did and I'm happy with it. Less maintenance than when I used to have live plants.

Your first fish were bichirs?! Lucky!! I started with goldfish like most folks I guess lol Didn't get my first bichir until I was in high school and I saw an ornate for the first time.

Hopefully you come across a healthy congicus when the time is right and you're able to get it. When you keep bichirs past the 16" mark, feeding time can get intense. You can hear when they are picking at each other because their jaw snaps make a 'thud' inside the tank.
