Oscar And Texas

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That's bad..all bad. Texas with an oscar, florida gar with an oscar in a 75g, & florida gar in a 75g.

Your tank is good for one full grown oscar & at most something the size of a convict. Florida gar's get big quick.

I agree. You really should just keep the oscar alone. Your tank is too small.

They key to keeping more than one is shelter. I would set up some ruble with 3 to 4 inch rocks creating hiding places then Get a pike cichlid. I have a pike in with my big boys and the sextalis stays out of trouble by hiding in smaller spaces.

If it were me I would build a community around around your Oscar. This will provide a lot more movement and activity. Something like a small school of silver dollars, clown loaches, a few medium sized plecos. There are a ton of options. Just make sure whatever you add is not snack size for your Oscar and isn't going to grow into a giant or a holy terror in the long run.

I dont want to upgrade right now because we got this tank like a month ago (bought it from a friend) and one of the main reasons we got it was the gar, could I at least keep him their until he gets too big?

Regarding the Oscar and the Texas, if you are keeping the 75g, then I'd keep the Texas, not the Oscar. The 75g could accommodate the Texas along with some other carefully selected fish (a large bichir would work for example) but if the Oscar, then only the Oscar. If you keep both, I'd put my money on the Texas to survive...

The gar will definitely outgrow the tank. Soon, he will not be able to turn around in a 75g.
