Found a builder in my area that will sell me a 240gal drilled acrylic - 72*30*24 for $1450. Does this sound like a good price? Sounded fairly cheap to me.

Sounds fair, as long as he knows what he is doing; that much water can cause a lot of damage. I would recommend making sure it's made out of 1/2" thick acrylic and find out what type of acrylic he is using. You want it to be cell cast acrylic and not extruded acrylic.

I would ask to speak with other people he built tanks for. Of course you will only get the successful builds. Ask to see ones that have been in service a couple years.

Price is good, but like everyone says make sure of the type and thickness of the acrylic and then go to stress calculator and make sure you are in range. I went 1 inch because i wanted no chance of bowing.

I ordered a 72*30*25 with 1/2" acrylic about a month and the base tank was around that amount. With lids a 26*6*16 external overflow, black on one end and bottom bumped it to $1780.

I get to brag. I have no idea who made my tank. 84x24x32 blue acrylic back and sides, dual overflows and lids. Brand new on Craigslist, the guy was asking $1500. I was in the market for a big used tank, and it had been on for a couple weeks. For fun I called the guy and got to talking. He bought it from a salvage freight place. Still had the paper on it and was strapped to a skid. It had a scratch on the front about an inch long. I guess whoever was getting it refused it cause of that. Bottom line I ended up getting it from him for $400! The scratch is at the waterline so I didn't fix it. It's been running for a year now without issues.

Thats a helluva snag! I've been looking on CL for a while now with zero luck. I rarely see a 180gal+ tank and when I do, prices are ridiculous. This builder seems very legit. Really professional website, business is an LLC - I'm comfortable doing business with him.

Acrylic is 1/2in btw.
