Buffalo - well i can always try starving them longer, but its pain me to see them knowing they want to eat so badly, especially the congicus. i know it is good to get a variety meal, so how i been pushing the massivore is, i miss the morning meal, so they only get one meal that day the night meal, and it be massivore. maybe this is why they don't like it? they been condition to equate massivore with hunger punishment all day?

Aw3s - your payara does fine with the poly? i got some pbass too, and been looking at the payara, they kinda cool with the teeth and all, but was reluctant to pull the trigger, because of the teeth and all. as for pellets, let me know if you find something, for now i am going to push gold as per buffalo advice.

Yep! I actually have 2 armatus in with them. They're both about 8" and my congi and large endli are around 15-16" each and they don't bother them at all.

Edit: I'm actually thinking about selling one if you're interested.

i did some reading and apparently there are like 4 types of payara, Hydrolycus scomberoides, "aka Scombs", Hydrolycus wallacei,Hydrolycus tatauaia, aka Tats or red tailed payara, Hydrolycus armatus ,and Rhaphiodon. most people on the forum says people confuse scombs with armatus. because armatus is really big, like 1 meter big! in 1 year they can hit 18", do you know your exact species? i cant believe they actually get that big, they look like silver dollars, but meaner and longer, how is possible is pure amazing, i be scare to put my hand in at 1 meter size with teeth like that.

After seeing a lot of them, it gets pretty easy to tell the difference. It's actually extremely easy to differentiate scombs from armatus cuz scombs have a deeper body, smaller tailfin compared to their body size and the fin b/w the dorsal and tail (I don't know what the fin is called) is reddish/orangish. Also young armatus have black freckles all over their head whereas scombs just look like mini adults. It's the armatus and tats that are difficult to tell apart when young cuz they look the exact same. The most common ones you'll find are scombs, armatus still show up here in Cali way more often than tats. I have still not seen a tat here. The wallecei is extremely rare to find in any lfs. The rhaphiodon shows up every once in a while and there's also the Cynodon gibbus that pops up every now and then as well.

Mine are actual armatus but I also have 3 scombs as well.

^ he knows his payara he's for sure got 2 true armatus, make sure your prepared for that growth rate I've read some crazy reports on here, personally I'd like a red or yellow tailed tat

Try soaking the cichlid gold in garlic before feeding to your fish, it works well as an attractant, I don't think a fish can associate certain food w/ starving. A good thing is if you have one bichir that hammers the pellets then the other bichirs see that one eating all the time and catch on.. I just tried frozen bloodworm for the first time today and its much more readily accepted then freeze dried. Thank god my rope fish was finally seen eating the bloodworms since the last time I fed live, 2 months ago lol. He was getting skinny. Remember these fish have evolved to survive droughts and such, and are very tough creatures. Don't worry about starving ones larger then 5-6 inches or larger for a while, they won't be negatively effected

I've been avoiding shrimp/prawn for a long time now because of the amount of thiaminase in them.. and they simply aren't that great nutritionally.

I see, I guess you know your payara then, I thought they were all the same. I also came across an article that one of the species always dies at around 12". not sure if it is true or not. what size are ur scombs? I read they get like 12-15". I think that might be more to my handling. any bigger and I might wake up to an empty tank except for one fat armatus. as for garlic, yeah I bought one of those kent garlic extract, been wanting to try it out, how long should I soak it?

Mine are about 6" and I've had them for about a year. It is very rare to see one over 12". If you get them young, you'll still be able to keep them for a while cuz I got mine at 3" and it took then this long to double their size whereas my armatus were about 2" when I got them and they grew to 9" in about 6 months.
As for garlic, when I use it, I only soak it for about a minute before I feed.
