Because they're cheap and easy. Most fish stores don't care enough to get the fish on a healthy diet, they make it your problem.

+1

I've seen at one of my lfs one of the employees I know literally opens the store scoops up all the dead fish in all the tanks and throws them in the RBP tank with about 10 adults in what I think is a 4'x13"x30"t

Pretty nasty and their priced at 70$ a pop

While I was picking it up at the store they were catching and feeding smaller fancy goldfish to some wild reds, a large H.malabaricus and a huge male dovii. I dont think the goldfish are big sellers.

I got him to take a bite of a shrimp with shell on using a jig line with a paper clip.

Wasn't expecting him to try it he looks pretty filled out already just gotta wait till hes hungrier.

He looks like a spilo to me. The price you paid for him is pretty good. Nice pick up. He should only need to be fed every couple of days, so it shouldn't be hard to get him to except frozen foods. To get him to eat pellets...just keep trying. I have some pretty big reds and they now will eat flake food, which I never thought would be possible. It's supposed to be for the convicts in the tank but they seem to like it lol.

Time your big fillet feeding so you do a water change about 2-3 hours after. This is so they digested the food and crapped, then changing water will get most that new ammonia/nitrate out of the tank!

That's what I always do, NLS pellets Tuesday and Thursday, then Sunday a talapia fillet followed by a 50-60% wc 2 hours later.
