Is Rihanna a music ICON???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
She fits the bill for "modern pop icon" IMO.

And by that I mean minimal talent other than looks and voice, industry driven, success based on sales rather than longevity or creativity.

So true :p
I'm in the generation who is supposed to adore her... I can remember when umbrella came out... and the nightmare when it was number one every week so on the chart show when my dad was driving me home... compare those lyrics to any decent rock band, indie band or even any pop act a few years ago... if she was on that scene, her lyrics would be laughed at as being unimaginative.... she isn't even a good role model imo.... she gets back with the guy who beats her, struts around wearing almost nothing and her songs have large portions of the same word or part of word repeated - almost like a baby learning to speak does... garrrr... rant over... going to listen to some proper music now to get umbrella out my head...

Didnt read through the whole thread, but just wanted to say, does any one honestly think we'll have another Michael Jackson or Madona again any time in the near future...

Personally i doubt it... since i think its going to be pretty hard to top the old school icons, especially since music isn't nearly the same as it was before...

Nope not for a long time. Most music today annoys me and the artist are just copies of one another in ways

I think so. I think there will always be a diamond in the rough or someone once in a blue moon who will do that

don't know about how soon, but yea, there will be

not yet.
for comparison, Madonna was offered a star on the hollywood walk of fame after 7 years in the business.

a lot on here are old enough to see how huge Madonna was. I remember it a little. it was pretty crazy from what I recall. and for her to continue to have success 10 years later, 20 years later and even 30 years later is pretty amazing. she's not my cup of tea but you gotta appreciate what she has done

kids at school wearing those lace gloves or whatever they are, some kids even draw a fake mole on their face.

and I remember the mj jackets with a dozen zippers.

well, you have to factor in that she's from barbados (international appeal) and sold the most digital tracks/albums in 2000s worldwide so she's probably "bigger" then you're giving her credit for.

plus there's not alot of influential young talent in the R&B pool right now. it doesn't make her one of the greatests of all times but clearly she's dominated an era.

i was watching the CMA like 2 weeks ago and they gave taylor swift a lifetime achievement award called the pinnacle award. i thought that was a bit crazy considering she's only 22. however, she's dominated a generation/era just like riri has
The only thing you need to factor in is that they are nice garages to park your bus in, the music is irrelevant for these events.
