Hello!

I just realized that my small EY Lab is holding so I put her in a breeding floating mini tank (the plastic small one usually used for gupiies or bettas breading)

Why I separated her is because She is with 3 EY lab males and and 3 BP so I thought that the fry will eventually get eaten as soon as she spits them.

Now my question is? Should I wait for her until she spit the fry Then let her take care of them? or separate it from them?

Or is it better to strip the eggs and hatch them in a tumbler? and when can I strip the eggs?

Which is the safest method to protect the fry?

i ll go for let her do her job then when she spits them off remove her and start feeding ur fry urself ... thats the safest ever beside why would u be on hurry ?! let her do it

The first few times my labs bred I stripped the fry from the female about two weeks after I noticed her carrying them. As long as you wait at least two weeks after mating the fry should be developed enough to be free swimming. They can then be put in a grow out tank til they reach 2"-3".

Now if you do strip her early & want to hatch the eggs yourself just make sure you have an egg tumbler and etc. already set-up. (this method will require more attention; i.e. removing unfertilized/fungused eggs & monitoring the air pump flow) And even when they hatch they'll have to stay in the tumbler until their' egg yolks are completely absorbed.

sounds like it's easier to just let momma hold onto the eggs until she spits.

Some female are bad mom and won't hold to completion of hatching. Some split prematurely, some eat the eggs, and this is why you need egg tumbler. It's always difficult to decide how far you let her hold or strip the eggs.

good point...I'd probably be inclined to let the female go through with it the first time and study her behavior, then plan accordingly next time
