I'm not sure what filter media to put into the second chamber (9" x 6" x 18") so any ideas would be appreciated..
Thanks in advance.

for what? biological or particulate? bio I'd probably go poret foam.
Yes, it's for biological filtration.. I'm not sure where to get poret foam but I've seen something similar..
How do the poret foam compare to other bio filters such as japanese mats or bio rings?

As I was searching around, I came across matala mat which looks promising.. Now I'm even more confused as to what to get..

I bought a 4 pack of matala from amazon before buying a large amount and I wasn't impressed.
poret comes from swiss tropicals although it originates from germany, or maybe switzerland.
here's an article explaining why the owner thinks you should use it..
and an article on hamburg mattenfilters which is basically using poret inside the tank.

I use this, alfa grog, and pond matrix in my sump, but only mentioned poret because it seems it would work best in your area. all are top level biofilter material, the max surface area I could find. the poret and pond matrix both can help lower nitrates as well, but it does take a while for those bacteria to propagate.

something else I was interested in were "bacteria house" ceramic media, but it was near impossible to find here so I didn't really look into it, maybe there available by you.

Thanks for your input.. I'll search around for the medias that you listed..
Bacteria house seems quite expensive though..

I would start with getting the electrical off the floor buddy

What's wrong with that?

death.
water splashing on electrical is a very bad thing.

all the media I listed is expensive to start, but after 10 years of use it won't seem so expensive.

Ah, yes.. That makes sense.. I wouldn't worry bout splashing cause the top is shielded by overhead filter..
I went to lfs to find the items you mentioned but they don't have any..
Can I get them online?
