What media for FX5 and 2262?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Can't speak for eheim as I've yet to use one.

FX5:
Top tier - 2 foam blocks, 2 fluval blue filter pads, 500g fluval prefilter, 300g bagged gravel
Middle tier - 2 foam blocks, 1 fluval blue pad, 500g fluval biomax,
Bottom tier - 2 foam blocks, 2 fluval blue pads, 500g fluval biomax, 150g bagged gravel

Occaisionally I use a fine fluval white pad in the middle tier when I want a little bit clearer water. But they only last with my little fish for about a month. Bigger the fish and more excess food/poo the less they last.

My largest bunch of fish being 4 inch denison barbs (15), red eye tetra's, 2 different rasbora's, a small pleco, and 2 SAE's.

When I had cichlids, to keep up on super clear water I was using 2 more white fluval pads, and 2 less blue pads, cleaning my filter monthly. I know, it's bad to do, but I also have 175 lbs of gravel in my tank. And was always very very careful to not let any media dry, just soaking and rinsing in tank water.

I run 2 FX5s on my 120g and I have the prefilter media in the top tray and biomax in the middle and bottom tray.

I run 3 fx5s on a 240g
1 filter i put cotton on top tray
Middle and bottom tray i use pot scrubbies and i took the side pads out and put cotton
The other 2 filters i use bio rings on all 3 trays but on the top tray i use less bio rings and add cotton on top of that and cotton on the sides

When i clean the filters i just remove the cotton and replace with new cotton and rinse the bio rings and pot scrubbies with aqaurium water but i usually clean 1 filter at atime

Not to hijack, but my eheim has a giant bag with it, do you put all media content in it or can I fill bag with matrix and then put filter padding loose in it

Sent from my iPod touch using MonsterAquariaNetwork app

The Eheim media bag is for the bio-media and is perfect for Pond Matrix, I've never used regular Matrix so I'm not sure of the media size. I don't recommend mixing the bio-media and filter padding in the same bag because it is difficult to separate them.

lol I figured as much but the bag is so massive, just has to ask

The reason the bag is so big is because the recommendation for the 2260/62 filter is 15L of bio-media. If you don't plan on using that much, just tie off the bag loosely to accomodate the media you do have.
