Size Difference between Senegal & Delhezi

Yes they do ok with knives as long as the sizes are right (one can't be eaten by another), knives should do fine w/ ample cover, so heavy planting would be a good thing and you won't have to put PVC in. Bichirs love PVC and they'll most likely fight w/ the knife over it or each other, unless there's enough of it for all of em n then you just won't ever see your fish haha

I'm not sure if I can do heavy planting though, I'm a total plant noob. :( I need to try though, for the fishies!

How many pipes would be enough? 1 for each? And really, they wouldn't come out? :(
I suppose it's silly to ask since you just said they won't, but I thought when you gave fish plenty of hiding places it made them more comfortable and so they came out in the open more?

IMO it's funny when you give them pipes that are too small length wise. They feel comfortable, but they hang out just enough so you can see them. As for plants lol I tried them and if don't want to I wouldn't because maintaining them is a butt load and after all the work I put in my polys just destroyed them lol. As far as how many pieces you can just put 2-3 large pieces in so that multiple can pile into one tube. As far as giving them more hiding places they don't necessarily come out more but they aren't as frantic and easy to scare as they might be.
 
Just to clarify fake plants work just as well!! +1 on that Dr. B, I mean of course you see them come out and breach but other then that they will swim right back to the pipe.

They also have weak eyes, so make sure the lighting isn't overly bright

Haha awww. So they like to rearrange the tank? I do like live plants but not sure if I can do the lighting/nutrients required to have a boatload of them.
Totally forgot there are some pretty wide pipes. I think will end up doing that, and maybe I can cover it in sand to make it blend in better.

I didn't even think of fake plants! Havn't bought any for my current tanks, though we do love other fake decorations..
That's another thing I'm wondering, if maybe I should buy lighting that I can dim, or if having floating plants would darken the tank enough to their liking.

BaconmeupScotty is a member on here and posted an interesting idea I think you will like a while back. Take PVC, coat it in silicone (like aquarium glue at your LFS), right after you coat it roll it in your choice of sand or gravel, and let it dry for about a week and toss it in your tank. Cheap, DIY, better looking!

Im waiting on lighting until i can find a nice set of dimmers, i havent ran lights at all for my main tank w/ the bichirs at all yet so theyre more comfortable. Dimmers are ideal for bichir and i think it gives the tank a more natural look, no river or lake is as bright as under a normal lighting system. Also since you mainly see dimmers on like public aquarium setups it will look more professional too

I use cfl bulbs (twisty ones) on my tank. I get a mellow yellow/orange light. 4 light up a 180 gallon quite nicely and I don't really have algae growth. It also has a nice shimmer effect on the substrate.

Yep that is what I meant by covering it with sand! I couldn't think of the word (silicone) at the time, oopsie ^^'

I'm hoping to find a happy medium with the lights, as I want the fish to be comfortable, but my dad (and me too, admittedly) prefer brightly lit tanks so we can see the fish well.

We have that kind of bulb on the killifish tank, I think! Does keep it well lit but seems to make it warmer, too. Bichirs like it warm though, right? ;o
Shimmer effect sounds quite lovely, especially since we plan on the black petco sand, which already sort of shimmers!

Speaking of algae, how do bichirs do with snails? I know they're not as good an algae cleaner as nerites but I try to put a mystery snail in each tank.
 
My buddy has some in with his bichir (make sure they're too big for it to eat!) But no my avatar was actually made for one of the guys that run Jurassic aquatics mike, I just saw it on Google images and liked it. Happened to be a coincidence it was made for my favorite person to get bichirs from!
