I want a giraffe catfish but not sure if I have room, I can get them an inch big and will be in a 220 until I get time/funds to build a 4x8x3 and only other "big" tank mates will be ATF most likely vittatus and Leiarius Pictus/marmoratus.

So my questions are:

Will a giraffe catfish (occidentalis) fit?

Is there a smaller substitute apart from dwarf giraffe catfish?

Thanks in advance

So

IDK what to tell you. The Auchenoglanis genus us a mess of uncertainty for now. IDK what those recently split new species grow to... but even the biggest ones do not exceed 3' in the wild. In captivity, I cannot recall ever seeing a g-cat longer than 2'... except maybe in Arapaimag's tank. Many appear stuck at or below 2'. So 8'x4' may be ok.

Agreed- mine grew from 6-18" in about 9 months in a 125. He's been in the 300 for 3 months now and he may have grown another inch. Can't see him getting much past the 24" in the next couple of years at this rate
