How would you filter a 300g

Umderstocked can be achieved via canister

Normal large bio loads need multiple high output canisters or a good/efficeint sump with a big turnover rate.

I believe this is most dependant on 2 things.

Heat transfer

Wanting to drill your tank or not.

pumps create quite a bit of heat. An external pump will have virtually no heat transfer, a submersible will transfer pretty much all heat to the water.

So if you have any problems keeping your tank cool enough then an external is a better route.

If heat transfer is not an issue. It just comes down to if you want to drill the sump or not.

I hate cleaning canisters.

It takes less than 2 minutes for me to pull the socks off and replace with fresh ones on my 300. Between that and pothos my nitrates never go above 15ppm and that's with a full spawn of fry in the tank.

That's all the maintenance I do besides water changes. Not knocking canisters but sumps are easier to maintain IME.

And way more cost effective. To push 2400gph through my tank I'd need 4 fx5(6)'s. With media your talking around $1400-1500.

I built my sump for around $400...,,
