Best Bang For Your Buck UV Sterilizer?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Since the 400 w. Viper is overkill.
I decided to go with a 110 w TCM or a 58 w aqua.ultraviolet
Which would be better?

I've got 4500 gal. Per hr pump and
800 gals. of water
What do you guys think?

Sorry. Not trying to steel anything.
Just looking for some answers and these Web sites for UV s really don't give enough info.

I'll start my own thread if you want.
Seems like this one died without any results.
I Figured I might help out others trying to do the same I am.

What ever happened to Ken Dragon getting back to you?

I'm not sure 110 would be big enough for your system.

Definitely wouldn't go with one that's half the size of that........

Friends the idea is to flow slow. My system is almost 2000 gallons and I run 2x 55watts inline and flow about 400 gallons per hour.
There's 24 hours in a day
24hrs x 400gallons= 9600 gallons

My tanks total volume runs through the sterilizers almost 5 times in one day which is more than ideal and does help .
Contact time is big and proper rate of flow that will kill everything that goes through it. The sterilizers I use are about 30" long x 2 so there's 400 gph getting 60" of contact time.

Lol don't worry I was joking feel free to post here.

I LOVE the turbo-twist from Coralife. Normally I don't think of Coralife when I think of high quality, but these things are great. A 9w will do up to 125g or so and I have yet to see one break. When I was doing professional maintenance on over 75 systems, we ended up replacing all of our broken UVs with these. I like running them on small tanks too because they can be set up to rest on top of the tank so that it's no more unsightly than a HOB filter.

The worst ones I've seen are Gamma UVs. They always end up leaking inside the quartz housing. Once I stuck my hand in a refugium to grab a clump of algae and was immediately paralyzed with my hand in the tank until I fell backwards. And that wasn't the only one that zapped me either!

Contact time is the amount of time your water is subject to the light correct? Why does it matter if it passes by slowly or passes by many times? Contact time is contact time right? Just like contact time with bio?

UVs aren't measured in gph or inches of contact time. They're measured in KJ/cm^2. THAT is the only number that matters. Unless you KNOW what your number is how can you be sure if your clarifying or sterilizing or even doing anything other then being a nightlight for your water?

Dang, was just pm'd by rodger this morning and now he's banned. I got your analysis rodger but I guess you won't need it now. lol
