thanks man. They are supposed to be an orange red. Once I used up my 10k bulbs ill switch to 8k bulbs to see if I can get the tile to color up better.

Oh, that's why :D. Yeah, with sand, cleaning and wc is pain :(
i know what you mean. I have a 40g planted tank. It's not easy skimming the top of the sand sucking fish craps and waste out.

I choose to have tiles to help the bichirs color and ease of maintainance. If I am short on time I can do 50% waterchange which is about 75g in 35mins.
 
Awesome collection of bichers. Everyone looks big and fat...can't wait to check back in when those congicus are 2'. And as far as substrate, I'd look into darker red tiles. I use tan "sand" colored tiles and my bichers are all washed out as well. I'm going to go super dark (rust red or dark brown) for my next tank.

Thanks. The tiles are actually different color outside of the tank. I think it might be the lighting changing the color.
