We're coming to America!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hahaha. Travel the world some and you'll see Texans are liked more than "Mericans". Though in recent years it seems only 1 in 5 Texans are actually native.
LOL

LOL, yeah March wouldnt have been my choice of month to visit, but I don't have much of a say in that. I don't mind a bit of cold, its the rain I don't like! (despite living in a rainy town and working outdoors)

Don't worry, we don't usually get much of it. Maybe you'll bring some by accident

If you are in the area, there is a neat little fish hatchery in Athens, TX. They have some nice aquarium displays with some massive native exhibits. Houston has some nice museums if you head that direction. Never been a fan of the tourist traps though.

And if you want good Tex-mex, go to places that look like small run down houses...not some flashy, health inspection passing, world famous restaurant. If you want good BBQ, similar conditions except it needs to look like a rickety old barn with a rusty roof. Anything more and you will be cheated.

Right, bumping this back up, flights are booked and we have a bit of a plan.

3rd March fly into LA, stay for a couple of days.
Fly up to San Francisco, meet my parents there, three days exploring the city.
On the evening of the third day we start driving north, work our way north via the redwoods and coast road up to Portlant for a couple of nights, then on to Seattle via McMinville to visit an avaiation museum.
In Seattle we're going to visit the Boeing factory, and Flying Heritage (Dad is very interested in old planes, and builds oil coolers/radiaters for warbirds and vintage cars). Not sure what else we're doing in Seattle, maybe some 'music tourism' seems how I'm a 90's kid.
From there we fly to Dallas for a week, one day will be taken up with the wedding and I'm sure my future brother-in-law will have some stuff planned showing us around his home town. Any suggestions of must-see places in Dallas welcome?
From Dallas we say goodbye to the family and fly back to San Diego, mainly to indulge in my love of craft beer, but will be doing some soght seeing too. Again, suggestions welcome.
After a few days there we drive back upto LA for a couple of days before flying home.

Sadly we decided to leave out the Grand Canyon as I decided it deserves more than a fleeting visit, and same with the National Parks in the North West. We will be back some time in the not-too-distant future, and will make sure it is over summer so we can visit the likes of Yosemite and Yellowstone. And we've scored very well priced flights through Air Pacific, so won't be visiting Hawaii. Again, it probably deserves more than a 48hr stop-over, will try get there next time.

Any suggestions of things to do/see/eat/drink along the way would be great!

Very cool! I've been to the Evergreen Air Museum with my class - I thought it is awesome, and I'm not even that into planes.

I live about an hour south of Portland. We are just a few miles from Silver Falls State Park, Oregon's largest state park. If the weather is decent you should definitely consider checking it out, as there is some very spectacular scenery. The park is only about a half-hour from the I-5 (north/south) freeway so it wouldn't be out of your way. Plus you could stop by and check out some tanks over a beer afterwards.

If you're going up to the Seattle area and like planes you need to go to the Museum of Flight. http://www.museumofflight.org/

Personally, the Museum of Flight > Evergreen Air Museum (though the Spruce Goose is badass)

By "music tourism" do you mean EMP (Experience Music Project)?

Which Boeing Factory? I've got five immediate family member who work for Boeing (or retired from Boeing).

I have three words for you while in Dallas:

DALLAS WORLD AQUARIUM.

It's in the heart of downtown. Don't confuse it with the Dallas Aquarium (which is part of the zoo and located on the fairgrounds). If you are that close and don't see it, you'll miss out. The website is www.dwazoo.com It was were I learned 90% of what I know about animal husbandry, exhibit design/construction and the rest of my career. I got my start there and left as a Sr. level staff. Hands down one of the best facilities in the US.
