2013 notables in the cichla forum

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Bad year for this Cichla lover. Still have a few because I can't get anyone to buy them, but they are NOT liking the new smaller tank. Haven't been around hardly at all here but glad to see all the Cichla coming in lately but I like having rare stuff too.

When u guys say "when rare was rare" I don't get it. Do you mean that you miss when noone had anything? To me there is still rare fish no matter how many are out there. They are the ones that shine above all others. They might be captive bred (F1 F2 or F3) or Wild Caught, but there will be cichla we all agree are exceptional & above all others... They will be rarest of all! I have gotten so many cichla this past year it is CRaZy!... I have seen fish grow to be exceptional while others from the same batch are just Blah... One day those BLAh fish may be beautiful too. You never know. That's what makes it enjoyable for me. I also enjoy seeing the different personality of each fish.

There is no RARE bass right now with the Exception of CJ's intermedia/xingu/whatever they turn out to be. Rare means only a handful of people have them. Seems like most Cichla keepers now just have all the same stuff stuff with only a couple of exceptions.

Always learning in this section! Looking forward to seeing what we all come up with in 2014, think everyone has bigger tanks and more cichla on the brain!

The good thing about this section is there are people at different levels of the game. I hear it all mentioned in this discussion.

There are beginners admiring and learning everyday from all people posting (bad and good). A lot of people come and go for one reason or another.

Some people are after only rare but rare could mean only a handful available or just hard to get like xingus, pinimas, kelberis, brokos,...

Very few keepers grow their cichlas from 1.5" to 15" plus and keep them. Boredom, tank size, family, ........

The advance are into breeding which a few already have in 2013.

Many are here just for the friendship. I think Tomka summed it up, no two cichla are alike. Half the fun is see what they turn out to be and would be nice to share pictures and discussion. It's a matter of how you raise them. I believe you can polish turd and at the same time you can ruin a gem.

New year....let's have fun!

I think 2013 was great for me in getting Cichla. My LFS managed to do a special order of Kelberi and Azuls for me. I know for sure that was the first time Azuls were imported to Sri Lanka. I bought the whole batch of 10 and sold 4 of them to friends. Now we have a small but growing (hopefully) community of Cichla lovers here. They already are talking about breeding in proper time. Looking forward to grow my batch of cichla in 2014 plus add a couple more outdoor ponds. Have fun everybody. Really appreciate the input I get from MFK when I need it. I think I've learnt a lot about monster fish keeping during the last year from this site. Thanks.

Your right about that poooofff their gone stuff Hulon.. Look at all the kels rapps has brought in or any other vendor over the years... Where the hell are they all now? Same goes for all them other bass over the years. Strollo you may not consider them rare right now cause of a good amount of people own them but Sh*t happens and fish die and just like that you may end up owning a rare fish. I remember at one point Indo's were not around and their price shot right up and no one could get them. Then Rich flooded the US with them lol. 15cents babies if you bought enough lol. You just never know when what you got will be the last of it. I'm pretty sure people though ST's would be around forever too ... Bet the old owners regret selling them all now lol
