Im splitting a smallish order from Rapps with another member on here, getting at least a teugelsi bichir, but i also wanted to take this chance to get some beautiful rare cichlid i wouldnt come across around here. My tank right now is a 70 long and has right now

-Red Wolf Fish (8 inch, placid, well fed on pellet)
-Orino Pbass
-gymno balzani
-rope fish
-IT dat
-poly palmas buettokoferri
-leopard cten

recently added pothos, sold my ornate bichir and palmas polli to make room for this

My ideas have been Peruvian Green Terror (a. stalsbergi), Incan Stone Fish (T. Macanzata), Satanoperca Mapiritensis, C. Festae, C. Grammodes, or maybe even C. Umbifra if they dont grow too fast (more then 3 inches a month). Sorry if i butchered the spelling on any of those haha

I am upgrading in the spring when i rearrange and fix up my room for when i get surgery in the fall, at least 180 gallon and when the big guys i have now and plan on getting get too big i can take out whatever is too small when i have to and put it in a different tank. Really looking for color more then anything here, love spangles and bright color. Even if multiple of them can work it would be wild seeing festae and stalsbergi in the same tank, or S. mapiri and festae.

The stock you have together now won't last til spring....dont buy more fish. You'll be throwing away your money.

The tank you have now is to small for what you have. Do some research on the minimum tank size for each species you have now. Its not a good idea to just buy a handful of random fish and throw them in a small tank no matter the length of time.

Umbee get HUGE and fast too, their aggression is extreme even at small sizes. I dont think a 180 is even big enuff for a lone adult male personally. With large aggressive central and south american fish ide recommend dedicating one pair (male and female) of a specific species to a tank. Do some more research

My suggestion would be that if you research your individual species you have now you'll realize that what your keeping together now is not ideal.. Adding anything else would be foolish

^ maybe you should read my post before going all "tank police". The only 2 fish over 5 inch right now are the red wolf who isn't going to get much larger and can live in the tank for life and the rope fish who could also live in that tank for life.

Its called a grow out tank, throwing these fish in say a 120 wouldn't make sense, they'd never be able to find food because they're all babies. None of these specie are going to get over 9 inch in the next couple months, your nuts if you think they can more then double in size by march. I've done my research, none of the fish are stressed or being stunted because I keep the water quality really well, none of them are going to be

Also that's why I'm asking on here, umbee doesnt seem like a good idea, that's why I checked on here. My current fish grow at about an inch or so a month, maybe a little more. In 2 months the Orino will be around 7 inch which it still has room in the 70 at that size, the IT dat will be around 6 inch or so, which will be fine for it in the 70, the leopard cten and the balzani are both maxing out at around 6 inch. Which I'm selling them anyway pretty soon. Even if they do grow faster then my projections I am capable of getting a bigger tank sooner

No one was going 'tank police' you asked for suggestions and was given one? A similar one by two different people at that. If your getting a 180 in spring just wait...the warmer temps will be far less stressful on the fish if anything.

BTW, I have several 2-3" fish in a 265g 7 foot long tank and they find food just fine...beg for it at the top every time I walk up to the tank actually. Do what you want, your tank, your money, your opinion, and your loss if it goes wrong. No harm done to me- constructive criticism bro, you asked for it, take it and do what you will!

I wouldn't put anymore fish in there either, let alone dropping freshly winter-shipped fish in a tank without quarantine!

Matt

Agreed. And shipping in the winter is always tougher.

Just wait till after the upgrade. I'm sure it's not what you want to hear but it's for the best.

Its warming up around here next week to the upper lower 40s I guess, figured that would be a good time. Also Jeff didn't say anything about shipping being sketchy for when it warms up, him being who he is I think he knows how to ship fish. Who said no QT?

I have 3 "QT" tanks one 20 ga metaframe, a 30 ga, and a 10 ga. I can't wait till the upgrade if I want these fish to be anywhere near the same size ya know?

Say if I waited to get a juvie festae, that thing would never make it to the main tank and if it did it would be in heavy danger, and that would doom it to being re homed or being in too small of a tank for too long. The new fish will be alone in either the 20 or 30 for a month anyway for QT, and in a month my stand will be done and it'll be waiting for a tank, and by the month after it'll be done and ready for fish. That's the reason why I need to get these guys sooner then the upgrade. A friend is taking the leopard cten and the balzani before this shipment comes in anyway so there will only be 5 fish in the 70, then the new fish will only be in there about a month before going into the bigger tank

I'm surprised I'm getting this kind of result from this thread lol, all the fish in question are juveniles in a 70 gallon tank for around 2 months. There will be 7 fish in the tank most of which are under 5 inch and probably won't get past that before the upgrade, for which I already do 40% wcs twice a week to keep nitrates under 20ppm. I've already ran this by other people in real life, and I haven't had any responses like this

Plus I don't want to spend an arm and a leg on big fish which always cost more, and I like to see them grow out. And I've found in the past fish who grow up together do better together in the long run

I believe you got such strong responses from very experienced keepers, because a 180 is too small a puddle for 2 of the fish you mention at the onset.
Although your fish are small at the moment, both the Pbass, and the umbiferum are too large for, and don't belong in a 180 unless they are alone.
Did you ever see one of those National Geo specials where a river drys up and a bunch of fish are trapped puddle waiting to be eaten by crocs and buzzards, that puddle is about 10 times the size of your 180, much less a 70gal.
And as an aside, my 3" grammode cleared out (killed) all other fish in a 75 gal in about 3 days.
And an umbi will eat your ctenopoma and balzani in a very few short months.
If you already had the 180, left off the Pbass and umbi, the objections to your list may be have been slightly less intense.

Yeah def don't order this week... its like minus 30 with the wind chill bro, lol. They cancelled the sabres game because of the driving bands, but back to your original post... I would not get an umbee. Since you seem likely to order a cichlid, I love festae n green terrors... both some of my favs and which ever you select I'm sure will be nice... jeff has great stock. That bass might get too big tho... fyi. Good luck to you.
