what is the best tank size, tankmates and filtration for bettas?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You want to keep them at 78-82F :) Which if my googly skills are correct that'd be 25.5C to 27.7C.. Heater is always good just to make sure the temperature stays stable. Up to you though.

fyi, i didnt put a heater in my oscar tank because the temperature is always at around 24-27C, the temperature never goes less or more than tht. but yeah, i would considerate of putting one. btw, are fake plants good enough on betta tanks?

Yes fake plants are fine but if you can try to go with silk rather than plastic. When getting decorations for bettas you want to do the pantyhose test which is where you run them across the decoration, if it snags on them then it will snag the bettas fins.

pantyhose test? never heard of it. lol but yeah, will do. how do i run the test?

no filter? did u plant your tank? im worried if they get disease.

Two bettas in six years and never had a problem with disease... Change the water often and keep the water warm.

Here is a story.
I introduced a stunted catfish and he tore my current betta apart.
I took took the betta out and a month later the he looked awesome again. All done without a filter.

Personally, I keep my Betta in a 12gallon nano. I think with Bettas it's most important to have a stable warm temp. Years ago, our crown tail kept in a bowl would have its fins get curly, clamped, and short during the winter and grow back during the summer. I think the poor guy was cold. Since then we've only kept then in tanks. I've kept them in tanks with a lot of current and others that are still. Mind you I'm more into the short finned varieties, long finned i would watch how much surface current there is, otherwise he may just sleep near heater or behind hob out all the time. Good luck and post pics when setup.

so, no aggression showed by them? u mean gentle community tank? i would love to your setup by the way.

I've never noticed any aggresion from them. I did have two females and a male, one of the females died about a month ago. I believe she died of old age tho.

Male and female.

They are just bettas from Wal-Mart tho, nothing special I just liked how they looked and wanted something for the top water. In my experience if you have fish that are always out on the top, tush swimming mud water as well, a lot of my fish that usually hide or sit in the bottom become more active. And with the heat, my tank is usually in the 78-80 degree range.

You take the pantyhose and then drag them across the decoration, if it snags then it will tear the bettas fins. :) That is the only way I know how to explain it.
If you get silk plants you probably don't need to do that test.
