Here's my 500liters tank with a bunch of polypterus, and others... I'm planning on breeding on these later when i've moved them to a bigger tank, 800liters. Anyone who has good advice on breeding them? I've read that they like/need(?) acidic water to breed, is that true? Im going to put in lots and lots of plans and roots and some floating plants maybe? And then make the temperature stay at 28-29°C, with small waterchanges with coldwater to make it feel like rainy period. Is it a good/bad idea to have delheziz, palmas pollis and endlis in the same tank while breeding or should i only keep 1 species? I thought if i kept all of them the chances of breeding will be bigger? And maybe even get hybrids? :naughty:

it's really hard to breed natural hybrids let alone breed an UJ and LJ hybrid. It would probably be better if you seperated them because if eggs are laid they will be immediately eaten by others. Breeding polys alone is pretty hard but doable.
http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?523920-Breeding-Ornates&highlight=Shopko here is a thread in it. Not the same species but you get a really good sense of what they need.

Thanks for the link! Yeah my plans are not to breed hybrids, i just thought that if got for example delhezi and palmas pollis to breed and they are in the same tank maybe hybrids could occur! I did get fry's on my senegals i had a while back. They died though... Another "problem" is how many females and males should i keep? i've read that some species need 2 males + 1 female, and vice versa. And i've read of another who bred ornates and had 11 of them in the same tank... That's why i thought if i kept alot of bichirs in one tank, stimulate the breeding season, chances are higher for getting eggs? :) As soon as they've spawned i'll pick up the eggs, that was/is my plan at least.

Beautiful tank svampus. What type of lighting are you using to get the ambulia to grow?

Ive heard it helps to play the sounds of thunderstorms in the background to further simulate the rainy season when they breed

This is just a regular light ramp with 2 blue t5 lights. They grow like hell! Almost hard not to get them to grow :P

Haha really? Sounds wierd, can the fish really hear that? :P Anyway, changed plans. I think im just gonna keep them for now, and put some more fish in there. Breeding them will be a future project. Thanks for the tips anyway! :)
