Hong Kong Species Only Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Currently, the Wild Animals Protection Ordinance (WAPO, Cap. 170) in Hong Kong does not contain any freshwater fish species. There's legislation in the works to add FW fish to the protection laws but, it hasn't happened yet.

To date, the only protection FW fish have in HK is via placing waterways off-limits from fishing and collecting. You may be able to obtain a limited collection permit to collect in those areas. But, I haven't any idea of where you need to apply.

Well I know how to get a pass. It's about 20 dollars for a month or something. I'll get it when it's available! Do you know any other species in Hong Kong? That aren't endangered and are full freshwater, not terapon jarbua, they are salt, brackish and fresh, they can tolerate all three. Not all gobies. Although I would like to buy a large marbled sleeper goby from the sea food markets. That is once I get my 225 gallon tank. Do you know any protected species? I know the sweet fish is endangered, a few freshwater eels like the swamp eel and some barbs are protected because they are endangered. I have Hong Kong newts and they seem to not be protected anymore. Any other fish that are protected?

A start to my Hong Kong species only tank. I went all the way deep in the woods and fought through the prickly branches just to head to the streams. 2 species! The shrimp and some native sucker loaches.

It is a temporary holding tank, we probably will change. Or not. But the fish are doing just fine. Next I'm looking for some zacco platypus and parazacco spilurus. I might hike into brides pool (which is known for its curse because every year, at least a single death has been recorded.) for some nice bony lip barb and some other species of barb. I have Hong Kong newts. I got them from a fish store. Didn't need to catch those little monsters. I'll forget about the channa sp. in Hong Kong because those are generally nippy and aggressive fish.

Got those in tai mo Shan. We had to climb up a few near vertical rock faces with nets in our hands. XD some how I made it back without to many splinters.
