About a week ago, my freshwater Lionfish (toadfish) passed away. I had him for over a year. He went on about a week or so of not eating ( i was trying to get some variety in his food, but could not find anything local that he liked except Shrimp). He then got to where he would not eat the shrimp. I could maybe get him to eat a very smaller portion of one piece once a week, but that was it. Before the eating episode, he was fine and mobile as they should be. Even on the days I fed him (M,W,F) if it was late in the evening and i walked by the tank. He would come out of hiding and wait for me to feed him. I'm assuming since i did not give him enough variety that was what shortened his life and caused him not to eat. I've done alot more research on them and still up in the air if I want to get another.

This is why i'm asking for suggestions.

Tank Details:
55 gallon Brackish Tank
Sand Substrate
Two Marineland brand top tank filter systems, can't remember model off hand but the bigger units.

I'm looking for one fish that I could keep in this tank. I would really like to stay brackish if possible since I already have most of the stuff to continue the brackish set up.

I loved my lion/toadfish, but just wondering what all else is out there?

Seen an orange toadfish, they looked pretty neat, but uncertain on if they are full salt or not?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated :)

The width of our tanks tend to limit us a lot. But even with a 55gal, you have a large selection still for brackish tanks, though mind the tank busters like always as they tend to be prevalent in brackish habitats. If I didn't already have my toadfish, I would consider getting a crazyfish (Butis butis).

Okay so per my son, he requested that I get more fish this time since my last set up only had freshwater lionfish (toadfish).

Here is my idea of what I'm wanting.

Need some suggestions on qty for 55 gallon.

Violet (Dragon) Goby (had one previously and miss it) Qty: 1
Bumblebee Goby Qty: 2-3
Orange Chromide Qty:2-3
Wrestling Halfbreak Qty:2-3

Will this be too much for my 55 gallons? I have a few good hiding places for the violet with Sand substrate. I'm also going to add alot of fake plants plus need to decide on a big decoration for the middle.

You'll be fine with that stock. You can even add more if you wanted. When I had my 55 brackish, I had:
1 green spotted puffer
3 "freshwater" morays (gymnothorax tile)
1 "freshwater" lion
2 dragon gobies

And the orange toadfish you were asking about is purely marine unfortunately

i would look into the Butis butis for sure. i recently got one and i love him. also knight gobies are a great addition. i currently have 3 (1 male and two females) i love to watch them. mollies are also another good choice, they will also breed and give your predators a treat every month or so. when you say bigger fish what size are you talking about? over 6inch? or do you mean something along the lines of 12inches?

Maybe something over 6 inches. I miss my freshwater lion just want "more" in my tank or I would go back to just one of those.
