Keeping Exodons with large SA cichlids?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Haha I know. Yeah that was my initial thinking before I read a few threads on here. I'll definitely do frequent updates on temperament, feeding and interactions. Right now they are staying mainly in the top level of the tank, are schooling pretty tightly and seem to be terrified of my cichlids because they scatter and regroup across the tank once one comes near. Mine are also in the 1"-2" range and the GT does hunt at night which I learned from my tiger barb dither experience so I will let you know how it turns out.

I don't know if I would mix them w/ large cichlids that might eat them. They don't get that big. I once saw a JD snacking on them at a LFS. I told the owner and he said that JD ate 5!

^ wow that would suck. They survived the night which is when the GT would have gotten them, but I did hear a splash or two after I turned the lights out. The tank is covered so they can't jump out and I believe they are just jumpy. When I turn the lights off they school extremely close and tight. All of the cichlids look fine, but it's only been a day so I'm not surprised.

I wasnt brave enough to get those exodons, they are beutiful though! Did they still have both sizes? Don (the owner) said he never got ones before that were that large (they must have been at least 3 inches). Love that store.

I asked the same question last weekend with a guy at the local LFS who has been in the cichlid scene for some time. A really trusted guy who knows a lot and has been involved in every aspect of the hobby. He recommended against them in the long term since they are scale eaters and have been known to nip fins.

If you luck out and have one that likes the taste of cichlid flesh, they'll all jump in and do the same.

Not worth the risk so i passed....never kept them...but i'd recommend you pass as well. If you decide to try it, let us know how it works out over time since i think they look great.

they do get to 5 inches so they should be ok with MOST CA cichlids barring the Dovii, Managuense, Umbee, Snooks, and Basketmouths.

Andica the biggest is 2 or 2.5" so I'm not sure if they are the same. And yeah that store is the best.

Mrrobxc that's a shame and I always appreciate wisdom from a long time fish keeper. Maybe it was a mistake rushing into them. I wanted a new school and since I don't have a good LFS by me and Aqua Hut always has such a nice selection that I get tempted. I'll keep this thread updated and if they get bad I'll sell them. So far they won't go near my cichlids, but that might change. My severum, bp and GT all nip at them when they get close so at least at this size I'm not too worried. A school of 6" Exodons is a different story.

Joel I appreciate the hands on experience. How big were your oscars? I might have to sell them down the line if they get aggressive.

Wow I wouldn't have expected that. How long after you introduced them to your tank did they start attacking the oscars?

Within the next day or two. I noticed missing scales on the tank mates. Then I actually witnessed one of the exodons attacking an Oscar. I took them out of the tank after that. They are viscous.
