Keeping Exodons with large SA cichlids?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah your jag will probably eat them. An observation i made during this experience is that Exodons come to the surface at "night" when the lights go off. Its like clockwork. When they are at the surface they are easy prey because they slow down. I'd love to upgrade the tank. I almost bought a 180 over the summer. Unfortunately I rent though so I want a tank that's relatively easy to move. That being said I can definitely see a 75 or 90 in the near future.

Do yours school together pretty good? The only time mine ever seem to school is when I'm about to feed them or if someone walks by the tank... otherwise, they seem to be scattered all over the tank when I'm just sitting in the living room, constantly chasing each other. Does that seem normal compared to the group u have? While I was expecting the constant chasing from researching them before I got them, I was also expecting them to be in a larger group most of the time

Mine schooled extremely well, but im sure that was largely because they were scared of the GT. During the day they were in a tight school and moved quickly so they were safe, but at night they scattered near the surface and slowed down making them easy prey. They didn't chase each other as much as I expected either. Are yours by themselves?

Yeah, I have 13 by themselves in a 55g. I like them but don't know if I like them enough to keep them by themselves long term... Eventually I may sell them or just throw them in my 125 with my Jag and see what happens so I can free up my 55 for a pair of Salvini's.

most characins are shoalers and will not school unless they feel threatened (which isn't a state you'd want to keep fish in constantly). Shoalers are in loose aggregations with the fish literally scattered throughout the tank. They stay close enough so if there is a threat that provokes them, they can easily organize into a school.

The only real schoolers available to us are smaller slim tetras like Cardinals and Rummy nose. Even then, most of the small tetras are shoalers.
