Ive read that they are hard to keep and like groups. I knew someone who kept one with no problem and had it for a while in a community planted tank. The info is kind of all over the place.
I only want one because my grandmother wanted one and she passed away saturday. She also liked pictus catfish and loved the pleco we had.
What are pictus and gold nugget plecos like in a planted tank?

They do school but they are also territorial. Usually the most dominant one will bully the others so unless you have a large tank and can buy a lot, it's better to go with just 1. They are also mildly electric and they prefer sandy bottoms. I had mine for 2 years and I only fed it worms. I was never able to get it on pellets.

My condolences on the passing of your Grandmother.

I had one who lived with a rope fish. The elephant nose would pick up the rope fish with his trunk and spin him around. I can't be sure, but it seemed like he was doing this for fun. He ate bloodworms. If I remember correctly they are sensitive to electrical currents. It is somewhat of a specialty fish in my opinion. :)
