How would you stock this aquascape - 125g:

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I like the scape, plants will be hit or miss.some fish will tear plants even if they don't eat them.I like the idea of a big school with a few mellow cichlids...S.A. maybe chocolates, acaras.CA....nics,Lyons and maybe SD(but they are known plant eaters....)

Trying to pass geo's over on the wife and she just feels there's not enough color on them, when compared to the EBJD/sev's. I showed her the orange/red head tapajos; is there any other geo, suitable for this tank, easily found that I could show her? ALso, what kind of current do geo's prefer?

I have 2 sevs with anubis, swords, onion plant, and green tiger lotus and no problems. I even have a melanurus and 3 silver dollars in there.

I haven't had that luck and even Anubis being eaten by melanurus. They are pigs that gorge themselves on anything that is edible lol. The SD left them alone.

I would do a female salvini, a group of thorichthys (like meeki) and a school of livebarers or tetras. That would add a lot of color.

Darth Pike hit the money with the Geophagus, true they are coloured differently than EBJD's or severums, but they are very striking in their own way :) hopefully theres a few good images you could pull off the web to show her.

My severums in the past never touched my large leafed anubias, hadn't tried them with the smaller varieties though. If you got 2-3 different Severum morphs that could end up stunning

How would 12 Redhead Tapajos do on this floorprint; I was reading that 8 is the minimum to go with? As for the dwarf pikes, which do those fall under and how many of those would be ideal? Wanted to do a few wood eating plecos as well. If we went with drwarf pikes I assume schools of tetras and such would be ruled out?

I'd looked at Heckelli(sp?) I believe but they look like they get a bit bigger, live in the middle of the column and arent truly eartheaters? If I go geos, I'll likely order from John (snookn21) as I've ordered from him in the past with great success.

Geophagus Deamon XXXLG.
Geophagus Heckeli 4"
Geophagus Jurupari Lg
Geophagus Redhead Tapajos 2.5"
Geophagus Red Hump
Geophagus Surinamensis Sm
Geophagus Surinamensis Lg
Geophagus Winemilleri XXLG

How many of those are in the 'medium' size family of geo's?

Red humps are most likely steindachneri?

Would some like electric blue rams work with redheads? + a few schools of say bleeding heart tetras / cardinal tetras/ black neon tetras? I think I'm really favoring the geo's at this point. Maybe a pair of yellow acara? Would tetras be ok with acara's?

The other take I was interested in if they would work would be the redheads + yellow acara + Crenicichla Atabapo Guainia?

Thoughts/suggestions/past experience welcome!

So we've decided on Heckelii and redhead tapajos. This is what we're thinking of at this point"

10-12 redhead tapajos
7-8 heckelii
(maybe a lower amount on each and putting in a yellow acara pair)
2-3 small fancy plecos

here is where we're stuck on what to add:
2-3 schools of tetras

or

12-1 various group of rainbow fish

and a school of 10-20 corydoras

Thoughts?

tetras and corydoras. Sorry, I just think that they would look better with the geos than the rainbows. I have kept both tetras and rainbows, and the rainbows aren't colorful until they are pretty big, and you could keep a bigger shoal of tetras (which looks better).

Well little late but no worries as I got both (rainbows + tetras) I skipped on cories due tot he sheer amount of bottom activity already.

I ordered from Gunpowder Aquatics and Snookn21(freshwatertropicalonline). Both shipments are set to arrive Friday, being shipped overnight Thursday.

Total stock arriving:

12 x 2.5" asst rainbow fish
12 x 2 bleeding heart tetra
25 x 1.5" black neon tetras
6 x 2" blue acara
8 x 2" heckelii
12 x 2.5" redhead tapajos
L178(redfin speckled)(6")
Albino LF BN
L075 yellow spot pleco

Should have plenty to watch grow out and a decent selection to thin out with. Final thinned out stock after they grow out should look gorgeous.
