I am in the process of setting up 2 135g setups. I have a pair of fx5 and a pair of ehiem 2217's. I plan to use 1 of each for each 135g. I have always used sumps and HOB filters so not 100% on how I layer these canister filters.

I thought I had it figured out until I saw this photo... it shows the ceramic rings before the coarse sponge filter. Is this the proper way of setting it up?

I currently have ceramic rings, biomatrix, 2217 coarse pad and filter floss.

Eheim considers the Efimech ceramic rings as very coarse mechanical filtration media. There is a video on youtube by a chap named Pondguru that shows an alternate way of filling it up with the pads on the bottom. Personally I like to have the fine on top because I rinse out/replace the fine media and run tank water back down through the filter to flush it out between total emptying and cleaning the can.

a course sponge BEFORE the bio rings would prevent having to clean those rings.....

If you did put the coarse sponge over the rings, what would be the point of even having the rings? If you don't like the rings you can just put the coarse sponge on the bottom and either double up on them or add in something like Purigen in further up.

I am talking about direction of FLOW.....1. COURSE SPONGE... 2 BIO... 3.FINER PADS:)
