Petsmart, Petco, etc

My local Petsmart actually does change their stock. Ropefish are a new addition, and they carry ghost knife fish now in place of clown knife. Bristlenose Plecos started showing up there about 6 months ago. They used to have Senegal bichirs but no longer unfortunately. Of course the majority of their fish are the same, but now and again they get something new.

My local country max is a great place. They have cichla occasionally and even Motoro's at least once a month. They take really good care of there tanks and if there is a sickness like ich in a tank they immediately put up a not for sale sign. If you have one near ya I recommend checking it out. I dont use feeders or any live food but they always have healthy feeders, crickets & ghost shrimp.

My local PetSmart has clean tanks and everything but they never have ANY fish worth buying IMO

I am surprised that nobody has separated the two.

I have been to at least 4-5 different Petcos's and Petsmarts in the Baltimore metro area. I strongly prefer Petsmart to Petco.

In every case, IMO, Petco was less sanitary. The only single advantage that I can see of Petco > Petsmart is the $1/Gallon 40 gallon breeder tank sale. Four 40 gallon breeders for $160 and all well made.

As for accurate information regarding fish:

I just read the single WORST description in the history of fish sales from the well respected wholesaler "Seagrest Farms"

According to them:
Alligator Gar - Minimum tank size = 125 gallon
Maximum fish size raised in aquarium = 120 inches.

I kid you not. Go to their website, and see what they are selling to the LFS's as and then bust the chain stores backsides.

120 inches! Are they even aware that is 10 Freaking feet long. They world record in the wild isn't even close.

Just for stinky poops, and grins, how is it responsible to keep a 7' alligator gar in a 125 gallon aquarium?:nilly:

+1! Petco always has dead, sick blind fish. Petsmart it seems to depend on whos on shift that day. Certain employees are great (might actually be dating a girl who works the fish counter soon :D) but then some are dumb as rocks. I saw a guy bag up a bunch of Neon (manmade neons) fish (like all of the different kinds) then grab a senegal bichir and a male crowtail betta. All were going into a 20 gallon tank.

Gahhhhh that makes me mad, especially if a polypterus is involved

I live in Albany by and the petsmarts near me actually have cleaner looking tanks than the lfs' in my area and the dennisons barbs I bought from petsmart are better quality than my lfs and half the price. It's surprising that these chain stores are keeping their quality up

This thread is blowing my mind People having positive expierences with petco/ petsmart. Is this opposites day or something? Every thing I have bought from them has come home and has had ich or ip's i never buy from them anymore.

Staff usually knows little to nothing mostly high school kids. I bought a fish from them once and the girl tried to fill the bag from the feeder fish tank that had about 10 dead feeders in it. I asked her to take water from another tank. She replied its all the same water. I watched a worker pick up a decoration and under there where 5-10 (hard to tell) half decomposed plecos.

Are you talking about the one in Latham? That is where I am at and I think they are awful. You ever go to Eddie's? they have some nice stuff.

Petsmart, Petco are some of the best places in my area. I have about 4 locally owned fish stores that I will go to but they are not vary close. I only go to them for the more rare and hard to get stuff. For really cheap fish I go to pet supplies plus. Though the last time I went to the store the tanks where almost half full of gravel. The gravel was really high in the back and lower in the front. I did not have a chance to ask why.

High gravel in the back is so they can vacumn the front of the tank only I deal with Petsmart and Petland won't even walk into a pet cetra we have 1 lfs and his stock sucks and he doesn't care my only problem with fish stores is not qt there new stock I realize they would need a full setup in the back but selling fish that just landed is bad practice
