I'm looking to grow out some geo altifrons before adding them into my 480 with my stingrays. The tank I have set up for them is a 55 gallon. The ones I am planning on getting are 3.5" long and I was planning on getting 10-12 of them. Filtration would be an Fx5. What are your thoughts?

How big are you planning on growing them out? Lot of warer changes and you can probably get by to 6-7".

Thanks for the reply.

6-7" is perfect. My stingrays are about 14" I dont want anyone to get eaten.

Ten 6-7" fish is really cramped in a 55. I personally would only push it to 5". Geos are very slow growing (altifrons being one of the faster growing geos), so it is going to take 8+ months to hit 6". Now that doesn't mean you cant pull off 6-7", I would say you need to do twice weekly water changes from the time you get them until 4", three weekly changes from 4-5", and daily water changes from 5-7".

Just my 2 cents.

Definitely grow them out first. I had 7 Geos at one point and am down to one. Lost them slowly over a year to the rays. Down to 1 and it is about 7" and seems to be pretty aware of the rays now. Like stated above water changes are probably as important if not more for growth than the actual feeding especially in a smaller environment. But feed smaller amounts more often also.

Taking this into consideration, you might consider setting up another 4' tank and splitting them into two groups of five. That would give you the room to grow them to 7-8" before moving them over.
