Dempseys are solid, their jaw structure is also what makes them such an attractive fish (to me anyway lol)

yeah if you raise them in good health they always make it worth it, they are about the most common cichlid next to Oscars and the reason is because they are just a real cool fish. a few months ago my friend moved to Miami he came to visit and he loved my Dempsey so when he got back he got a tank, I taught him the basics, he cycled his tank and grabbed a pair of dempseys, I tried to suggest some other fish too and he's like "nope dempseys are my favorite" so those are like his pride and joy now. not a lot of people have that attitude about dempseys cuz once some people step their game up they go with more rare stuff but hey I cant knock the species especially after owning the one I just gave up. he was a real active outgoing fish and that's all ill remember

yeah but the teeth on this bastard wer worse than that of my old 14 inch buttikoferi. ive never had a dempsey with visible teeth so its no wonder he killed that fish in a day. dempseys are smart in a larger tank they would rather pass on fights but when they have to fight for a territory or small tank its onn they are like pitbulls. its funny cuz he was raised in my tank with my mayan of similar size and they dont bother eachother . they wer sticking together in the 55 so i think thats the cool part.

You forgot to mention the water temperature ;) raising it(warm water) makes JD's go from passive to psychopathic fighting machine. This temperature trick works for many other cichlids too.

I had a friend who kept a JD and a RD in a 30g... I told him things would get ugly, the RD was chasing and beating the poor dempsey. So I brought the temperature in his tank(heater) and boy! Did things change :O The irony seeing a much smaller female dempsey chase a big red devil.

yes true, there is definitely a correlation, certain fish have that special number so to speak. put the temps down to 77 or under and notice aggression and activity drop. dial it up and certain species go haywire. my jags number must be 81 cuz the temps went from 78 to 81 and now hes pacing like a mad man lol

Temp drops w/ CA cichlids shouldn't reduce aggression since most like JDs already come from cooler water in the wild. It might help from keeping a pair from spawning.
Wut dat u fink yo?
