Stocking a 125g 6x2x2

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm a big fan of RedHook silver dollars to add movement to a setup. What substrate are you using? Since you decided on a group of Geos, may want to have an open space with smaller grade substrate for them to sift through. As far as the Big guys go - a lone Pearsei shouldn't be problematic.
I'm not a fan of silver dollars. I have open sand areas, and a few oak trunks. So a lone Pearsei would be fine, but how many Chocolates could I have? They are hard to get in Uk and a lfs has got two in.

Pearsei are really nice n should be fine in there.... if you want to go that route. Chocolates are nice too tho. Good luck n keep us posted on the tank.
Will do!

I would give the horn a miss but apart from that will be a sweet tank

Yeah I think he has to go.

I'd be careful with the FH. At 4", it hasn't yet reached adulthood. I've not kept them myself, but I have read many accounts of them being on the aggressive side. I'd move it before you come home to a bunch of dead or beat up fish.

Chocolates and pearsei are good choices for gentle giants. Bocourti would be a good choice as well. My experience with synspilum has been that they are pushy, as are all paratheraps that I have kept. The sevs will get bullied and the geos would get owned.
He is a bonsai so is gonna grow to 6-8", but he is a risk remaining in there. Are chocolates best left as a single specimen?

The chocolate I've kept in the past were relatively passive, even to their own kind. Males will get big over time, but I wouldn't hesitate to keep 2 in a 6 foot tank if you really like them. They are nice fish, but are very temperamental. Mine would always sulk for a day or two after water changes or a redecoration of their tank.

I have 4 chocolates in my 350 and they pretty much keep to themselves. I have a lone one in a 75 right now as a wet pet. As you can see I love chocolates and would advise them all day to someone that is looking for a gentle giant. Males can get 12-16" and females are usually much smaller at 8-10". They are typically not fast growers compared to other large cichlids.

Well..... I picked up a chocolate yesterday. Popped into shop and they had had to separate the two as had been fighting, but they had been sharing a 40 litre. So I chose the larger one that had picked the fight but was more responsive to watching my movements and was inquisitive. Today however the FH has damaged his fins and scuffed a few of his scales so the FH is off to lfs tomorrow. You have any pics of yours?

Well I was after a quirky wet pet.

Great fish, and love the video!

Good choice on a Temporalis, this is my male about 6-7inches. Im also from the UK.
That's a stunner. Sadly on Saturday I found him whilst trying to catch flowerhorn and he was lying on his side still alive, gills moving but wasn't recovering. So I had to euthanise him. Flowerhorn has now gone. I happened upon a 3-4" Pearsei for a good price. I still want a Chocolate, so will pick up the other one from the shop in a week or two.

Tank going well but clearly too much stock for long term. Think I will have to thin the herd, especially as I still want a chocolate.
I am constantly adding more wood to the tank so will do a massive water change to remove tannins and take some pics on Saturday.
