will algea hurt anything in my tank ?

I kinda encourage algae to grow in my tanks. It means you have an established, live body of water in your tank.

I also figure my Pleco likes it...
 
I think your still going to have to feed your algae if you want it to grow the way you want. It might even take some time to find out what the right combination is.

Maybe more light and feed phosphates?

Another thing I just thought of.
It might be easier to grow algae on a surface that's porous. I could be wrong!
But I've had all different kinds of algae problems in the past and not once did I think it could grow the way you want it to on glass.
Maybe think, real thin clay tiles for the bottom of your tank.

That could look cool.

what do you mean by porous ? and yes I have thought about tiling the bottom of the tank... saw some ceramic 12x12" black tiles for 2.98 each at local hardware store last week
 
if porous it gives something to get a hold of. Small pockets for things to settle into etc. As opposed to smooth glass..
 
My outdoor tile looks like it's a well chipped piece of slate so that you have traction when it's wet. Less slip and fall.

Ceramic tile that is truly smooth really isn't smooth. It just doesn't have divots that are noticeable. It's still porous.
 
Don't see why it won't grow hairy on any surface with enough time.
