Deep sand bed in fw tank

Would a deep sand bed in a fw tank complete the nitrogen cycle? Anyone ever use the jaubert system? Is that strictly sw?

AFAIK, there aren't the little critters in FW to keep the bed turned over and to process the anaerobic pockets.

Malaysian trumpet snails would aerate a sand bed.
