I got the inspiration from a guy in Youtube (UARUJOEY) but his design was sloppy. Researching a little more I came across this design from a guy in South America where the filters doesn't come by or they are very very expensive. All parts are readily available here in USA. He made his filter 12" tall for his 55 gallon tank but I'm planning to do mine about 36" tall. Check this pictures and tell me what do you guys think.

I'm researching and came across the pond filters. They looks like as a canister filter, I wonder if they can be used as such just with a little arrangement of the media

Any decision made yet?

Pond filters are just bigger canister filters. Hagen makes one (same company as the fx5 that is so common) that is about twice the size, and about twice the price. Since it doesn't have a pump it would be about $900 to set up the Laguna 3200. Since most people like redundant filters to avoid shock when you clean ($1800?) you can make a sump for much much cheaper.

A DIY pond filter is usually just a garbage can with media and it trickles through, generally not pressurized. Go on some koi / pond forums you'll see plenty, rarely see them on this site.

Well yeah I'm thinking about a sump also. I read that the trickle filters are one of the best and are not that difficult to make. You got to deal with the overflows though.

Overflows are awesome.

Overpower it, make sure you have at least 10x tank volume in circulation from your return pump while taking hear pressure into account.

At least thats what I do.

So you mean if I'm going to use a 150g get a pump of about 1800GPH depending on the HEAD PRESSURE LOSS (if the tank is 4ft high away from the sump). I'm planing to use 2 so the taller will be about 6ft from the sump then I'll need a stronger pump, lets say 2300GPH or so?

Yes.

Danner mag drive 24 should get it done.

Gives you a little extra @4' to make sure.

Might still need to supplement depending on the fish.

Something like this is what I have in mind:

Trickle filter on the right?

Over flows run into that and then throw the return wherever.

Yes but I want to use it on this type of sump (55g tank)
