Hello all, so I received my metae as well as a female diadema from Rapps a week ago. As it seems all of us who got this particular batch of fish, I am battleing a pretty nasty ich infestation. I have alot of salt in the tank and the heater cranked all the way up (its sitting at 86 degrees, doesnt want to go any higher) anyway, I was just watching the tank and I noticed the 2 metae (who I assume are a male and female) seem to be cleaning a flower pot I have in the tank. Is it possible I they may be ready to spawn? I read that they like high temps to spawn but I find it funny that this is going on in the middle of an ich infestation lol. I will keep you posted.

It's possible. Has the ich started to disappear? If so, they may be feeling comfortable enough to spawn.

Ryan, theirs has. As of this morning, I can see the breeding tube of the female starting to show. I am just amazed that its been exactly 8 days since I got them and they are already showing signs of spawning, I mean, they arent convicts!! Everything I read about them claim they are hard to breed, so this is pretty cool for me. Now if only the rest of the fish I got from Rapps would get rid of this ich, I have never seen a strain so strong, I usually get it knocked out in 4-5 days but this one is stubborn.

Actually, most acaras spawn young and fairly easily. As long as they have good water and good food, you can't stop them. The only cichlids I've found very hard to spawn are blackwater species (because they usually demand very soft, acidic water) or shy species (because they may not be comfortable enough to spawn). I remember when I first got my Mesonauta and I'd read they were difficult to spawn, then once they hit 3" I had fry everywhere. lol.

Now the fun part begins -- you'll probably see spawns every few weeks and have fry coming out of your ears.

temps closer to 90* would go a long ways to hastening the process. The strain of ich that seems to be common this season has been quite resistant accept to higher levels of heat.

I am trying lol. I have them in a 40 breeder with a 150 watt eheim jaeger. Doesnt want to push it above 86, I am surprised. Its funny I had an old ( at least 12 year old, and it just crapped out a month ago) 150 watt marineland heater that I had in my 55, that thing would take it 88-90 no problem.

Ryan, that would be cool. Get some more out into the hobby!! The strain that Jeff has are really nice, pictures (especially his lol) dont do them justice. The yellow on them are intense, almost as bright as my yellow labs. I also took your advise from a few months ago and picked up a group of Heroina. They are pretty cool looking, by so far they seem kinda shy, hang at the back of the tank mostly.
