I've been thinking of removing all the pool filter sand in my 180 & replacing it with black diamond.. I've said I was gonna do it almost every weekend for the past 2 months, however I realize it's gonna be a huge pain in the ass so I keep putting it off..

The best thing to do is scoop most of the sand out with a net, then siphon the rest out into a bucket, the sand gets caught in the bucket while the water overflows. That's the easy bit IMO, the worst thing is trying to clean the new sand enough so it doesn't turn the water cloudy.

Also I have heard people say that black sand shows as much dirt as white and PFS IME is the easiest sand to work with

Although expensive, Peace River gravel looks fantastic. Its fine enough to keep the poop on top of the gravel but also its the right color to blend in. I know its there but its not an eye sore at all any more. I have 7 Cichla that poop ALOT.

I used Fluval bio ring as the substrate, then after a week I have to add a ton of red lava rocks to cover all those poops.

I just recently converted to white pool filter sand. And although the poop is visible I prefer it much better over gravel. Also, I just bought an ehiem quick vac, (battery powered vacuum) and wow that thing works great on sand. Stirs it up just enough without sucking it up. Highly recommended. Takes a couple minutes every other day or so, depending on stock.

Maybe I should be just a bit more specific.... To me it's honestly more for the visual look... I've had black before & I just think it makes the fishes color pop more.. The poop doesn't bother me that much as much as the brightness does lol

Ah ok :) yea I am a fan of the black sand look but I stick with PFS because all the other sands I've used are to fine
