This spring's Characin experiment........

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Based on my experience with a gatf and a group of odoe I'd say you're golden. Should be fine.

Nice ATF! How big is he? What kind? Looks gorgeous and big! I like it! Want more pics ... as far as the odoe experiment i think young tiger fish are more at risk of getting pounded by an Odoe, i'm thinking, if anything, the new ATF might go after the odoes if he's bigger than they are, but i think you have enough action and fish in that tank that it should be no problem ... would be more worried about Robert going after the ATF right away, but if he's in already, that fear is passed, so hopefully smooth sailing

I'd be a lot happier if this guy would start eating. He had a long car ride, but he's been here a week and a half already. Was sold as a 15" VATF. He's got a bummed up eye, but hopefully I can clear it up. Looks loads better already. Stuff seems to clear pretty quick with 220 watts of UV running... lol

The Odoe I'd call 7-9". No aggression yet, but almost seems like the Odoe use a formation to hold the ATF in the corner, but he moves and they stay, so not sure IF I'm just paranoid or there's something to it. Will be hard to decide what to do if they are holding him, either abort the experiment or level the playing field and add the Tanzies.

Robert seems to be behaving for the time being, but I'd be lying if I said he didn't have me a bit worried. But this is why this V is in there and not my Ts.

We'll see how this plays out for a few weeks. Armatus are on deck to head in next.

Have you kept other ATF? I'm curious if others have experienced GATF being more passive then say Vatf or Tatf....... My G is a wiener. Gets picked on by the Ts and the Ts seem to be growing a lot quicker.

Hope it all works...... :)

With my couple hrs experience, I'd say the ATF is toast. Given you've past my record raised the Pikes from young, I'd say your almost golden buddy.

My GATF was a pansy when one of my VATFs was dominant. After the VATF jumped out the GATF took over and is now the boss of the tank.

Did your Vs and G grow at about the same rate or did you find the Vs growing faster? Or is it just whoever is dominant grows fastest? My G sure seems to eat more then my Ts so I'm kind of confused, but there's no question as to who is growing quickest here......

Hey, can you elaborate on ATF growth rates compared to the Armatus's since they've all been housed together? I'm assuming that the Armatus slow down after a foot. Once they're a foot is it slowed enough for the ATF to keep up? My Armatus seem to be growing really slow on pellets but am afraid once they're exposed to lots of food (lots of rays in this tank) they'll take off again and end up unable to house with the ATF.......

Not sure I'm aware of anyone else housing Armatus and ATF together......

sorry not much help, but i can say my armatus, slowed down at about 18-20"...lol

growth of 2" a month for the first few months, then about 1" a month since.

excited to watch the progression of your mixes though.

15 inches!!! Score! Haha, nice man he looks great! It always gets me worried when a new fish doesnt eat when i first get him, but i know for a fact i starved my G's for over a month getting them on pellets, and they were only 10-12 inches at the time so i wouldnt worry, pretty sure they can go a really long time without eating, and that guy doesnt look starved so i wouldnt worry ... the eye thing sucks, damn ATF's, they always go for the eyes! My prize G took an eye injury a few months ago, and still has a white dash in his eye, drives me crazy, but his feeding seems unaffected so hopefully it goes away as he gets bigger

As far as growth, my VATF has outgrown my G's from the start, he was smaller when i got him, but now he's bigger than both G's, and in the last couple months he's hit another growth spurt and is now slightly bigger than my dorado! Crazy, but its tough to tell if its because VATF's grow faster, or because mine just happens to be very bold and dominant ... my VATF eats a ton of pellets real fast, zipping around, while the goliaths take passes, but only eat 1 or 2 pellets at a pass .... i'd say their growth is very similar, and who grows the fastest depends on dominance and eating habits, not what kind of ATF he is, although i'm sure at some point the VATF will max out, while the G's will keep going

As far as the Armatus/ATF growth comparison, i agree that my Army def is growing slower eating pellets vs other ones i've had that i fed frozen, however this one is alive while the others died, so i still say pellets are better ... mine really slowed once he hit 12 inches, and now is growing at the same rate as the ATF's and Dorado and they are all in the 18 inch range, so i'd say the problem is with young fish ... the Army will way outgrow ATF's when young, but once they all are in the 12-15 inch range i'd say their growth is very close
