My "Aequidens metae", part 2

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I do believe the fish to be Aequidens sp. 'JH'. They slightly extend their dorsals when eating and the saddle does go into the dorsal to some extent. On most it's barely noticeable, just reaching into the base of the dorsal, but on a few it actually appears to extend at least halfway into the fin. If that, and the location, are the main identifiers, I'd say they're a match.

Yes, the length of the cheek stripe (not a full strip like metae, longer than the spot diadema have), the saddle going into the dorsal, and the location all point to JH's instead of metae and diadema.

The pics aren't very clear but is it possibile these are A. tetramerus "Peru"

Tetramerus don't have the cheek stripe that the metae group have, at least the ones I've seen (I admit to not seeing every Tet location yet though).

Ahh man, Ryan had me all excited for new pics and such. Was hoping to get an idea of I wanted to make the drive on Sunday, but I guess it saved me time and money.

Would still like to see some pics, Ryan. Really wanna know a more exact species for your fish.

Here are the pics.
First is the metae
Second is the Peruvian tetramerus
Third is the JH
All are from Jeff rapps.

Some good looking acara, Andicca. If that "JH" turns out to be a lady, and you ever wanna part ways...Let me know :D

They are impossible to take pictures of. They don't sit still. I took a video at feeding time and you get a slightly better view (and more natural colors) there. They still move so fast that it's hard to focus on them, though.

That video is very interesting. It looks like you could have a mixture of "JH" and diadema. Pausing the video at 17-18 seconds, would suggest that the acara visible would be diadema, if the saddle mark is present its very faint. However if you pause it around 22-23 seconds, the brighter yellow acara has a bit more of a visible saddle mark going into the dorsal.

The plot thickens....Nice looking fish though, and this makes me wanna buy some from Wetspot

^ It just seems odd that they'd have a mix of two similar fish from two different locations. If their order all came from one source, I'd assume all the fish are the same.

I'm still not sure the saddle mark is a definitive thing. If you go through all the pictures of diadema and JH it varies between individuals. I will wait until they get older and see how they spawn, then I'll know for sure.

I saw the extended saddle in pretty much all of the fish in the video, though it was really really pale in some of them. Even the pale fish at the 17-18 sec mark seemed to have it, but that could have been the black sponge showing through the dorsal.

Your Aequidens look just like the A. 'JH' I got from Rapps about a month and a half ago.
