Great, but confusing, shot that last one. :screwy:

I just checked the fry and they're still in a tight ball in the same place. I wonder if they're trying to send me an SOS, and that all is not right with them:confused:? I suspect that they're doing something that to them must be important. If I can figure it out, then, according to my wife, there is no hope for me!!

Methinks that tight moving ball resembles one big strange-looking fish, instead of so many tasty edibles.
It could buy them more time to develop.

You could be onto something Granny ... The "Scary Big Ball of Fish" theory. But ...

I think I figured it out:clap. Could it be that since I removed the eggs and hatched them away from their parents, and that the fry have no idea what their parents look like, that they've imprinted on a power head in the tank? They had other items in there to associate with "mom or dad" ..a heater and an air stone. But they showed no particular affinity for those things. Given a choice of an airstone, a heater or a small (and maybe that's the key) power head, which do you think is closest to an adult canarensis in appearance? Here are pictures. You decide. Just one more thing. I pulled out the power head and the fry dispersed. I could actually sense the disappointment on their little faces.(I don't mean to bias your decision). You'll have to excuse me. It's been a V-E-R-Y long winter.

Thanks, Jose. Seems like we're discovering new things about them. Never a dull moment with these little characters. Here are the fry as of yesterday, April 24 and today, April 25. Now, they're strangely clustered on top of a small power head that is not running. Why there? I know they love to school but they're taking 'togetherness' to a whole new level ... and at the same time making me a bit nervous.

No need to worry Jim, canarensis will crowd till they search for food on their own, I gather is important to develop the social skills they will have later in life. Cool picture btw

awesome theory!

we really learn from our fishes eachday.

Here are the fry as of yesterday, April 28th. They are feeding well on newly hatched BBS, frozen BBS and microworms. They have to be the "schooling-est" fry I have ever seen. I might have suspected this extreme schooling behavior. Even the older fish school incessantly until they reach sexual maturity and only then do they go their separate ways (in pairs) and become quite territorial.
